      Senior Data Scientist Interview

      16 Jul 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at DoorDash (San Francisco, CA) in Jun 2020

      Interview

The interview process starts with a recruiter call, followed by a take-home challenge. The challenge is fairly well described. Nonetheless, I think there are some issues in the process. * The challenge takes a huge amount of time. Sure, the expectation is that a candidate might spend 5-6 hours and it is entirely doable to write a response in that amount of time. Nonetheless, by providing candidates 7 days to complete the challenge you necessarily put them in a zero-sum Nash Equilibrium game where the candidates strive to polish their solution throughout the deadline period. This leads candidates to spend 10-20 hours so that their solution stands out a bit more than the other candidates' responses. * You will receive absolutely no feedback on the challenge, even if you request it beforehand. Largely because of this reason, I encourage candidates to not apply with Doordash, since it speaks poorly about the culture of the Data team that requests candidates to spend so much effort into the interview process and never provide them any feedback at the end. Recruiters are generally some of the nicest people I've met and they are your friends in the process. I do recommend that the recruiting team re-evaluate back with the Data Science team on what are the best practices for Data Science hiring and to introduce a feedback step in the hiring process.

      Interview

referred by a friend, and had the 1st round of interview consisting of 30-min case + 30min coding . The case question is not hard with pretty vague, but they do care a lot on how to translate the solution into technical solutions

      18 Dec 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at DoorDash in Nov 2025

      Interview

It was a series of two rounds, one was a SQL round, and the other a case study. They provide ample material to prepare for the interview beforehand. But be prepared for changes in the time length or order of interviews on the actual day. The SQL questions will be easy to medium.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The case study focuses on either two or three of their system: users, dashers, and merchants. Practice thinking by putting yourself in each role and evaluating the impact of a decision on you. Focus on metrics as well.
