      Tech Support Engineer Interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Everpure

      Interview

Where do I begin with this one... Got an email from the recruiter, after going back and forth between her and the director of support, finally got an interview with tech support since they declined me for the tech support manager after being qualified with 7+ years. Since they didn't have a tech support manager or an hiring manager, I was stuck with talking with two of their support people. The one was complete silence and the other did most of the talking. In the end, I wouldn't recommend anyone to apply here, if you read the past reviews of this company, you can see why. Loved how the recruiter used many templates instead of just writing out an email to discuss things as well as going back and forth with the director of support as being the middle person. Why have two tech support agents do the interview instead of a formal interview with a manager/hiring manager?!? Make sure you have your ducks lined up in a row first before doing anything else, clearly poor upper management style/process they have.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Everpure in Dec 2014

      Interview

I was contacted out of the blue by a headhunter. I hadn't heard of the company before and I almost declined to pursue the opportunity. The recruiter asked for my desired salary and after I responded, he countered with more which go my attention. Phone interview was first, basic tech questions about SAN infrastructure, and basic RAID differences. The phone interview questions were scripted so all candidates get the same questions and likely the same order. I hung up the phone with a feeling that I nailed it. Face to face interview was with 2 people, 1 manager, and one super tech. More technical questions to feel out my understanding of SAN and tech level came out. More basic networking and SAN troubleshooting scenarios were asked. At one point they gave me a laptop and asked me to determine the cause of a problem on their product. The given info was a performance graph, and a log file accessible via SSH terminal. I'm not terribly fast when typing on a laptop, scanning a log from a system that you are unfamiliar with, and nerves worked against me. I could ask questions about any line item in the log. Overall, I'm surprised I found the answer. Manager asked some questions off and on to feel out my personality. After the 2 person panel, I was supposed to meet with the site manager, but due to scheduling issues, he couldn't talk and settled with a handshake and hello. I left with my head spinning with RAID 4 vs 5 performance and rebuild comparison questions. I hoped they were asking me the questions to determine my thought process vs knowing the absolute right answer. Post hire I asked about this and they were indeed trying to determine my thought process. I'm still not sure about the right answers to the questions.

      Question 1

What are the differences between raid 4 and 5, which is faster, which rebuilds faster, and why?
