I applied through university. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Italian Institute of Technology in May 2011
Interview
I was referred by an internal employee and the process what somewhat very smooth. It started off as a phone interview process which was based on technical questions, relatively easy and then I was asked to do an on site presentation of the work done during my PhD. It was quite informal mixed with technical questions but also quiz like," how to get out of some situations?"
In a preliminary step, I had a Skype call with the group leader (I was living in another country). Following this, I've been invited to give a seminar at the institute. Travel expenses had been reimbursed and hotel accomodation was directly managed by the institute. After the seminar, several meetings had been organized with members of several teams of the institute.

Interview
The position was offered after a short skype call. It didn't seem an interview.
If you want to see labs, institute and meet the group it is very probable that the trip won't be reimbursed.
