I made contact at job fair. There was an email sent to me for interview times. I then interviewed at company office location. I was very over dressed, suit and tie. I think that hurt me. Felt like a good ole boys club that got interrupted with my my suit. I think the lead estimator, that interviewed me, instantly had me pegged as a salesman. It was obvious when he said, “I think you’d be better for sales.” Not exactly a complement when you are earning a TTU degree and looking for something that is in an office and challenging. It was also stated that the people they hire are usually new graduates that their dads have been around the industry for their entire lives. The kids that grew up with it in their family. I might be wrong, but I am pretty sure fathers working on commercial job sites do not have many opportunities to take their kids to work and show them the ropes. So, that statement made me feel as if I were too old and therefore could not be a part of the company, unless of course my father already was. It was mentioned that they rather hire a young graduate that had a slightly different degree than to hire myself, someone with several years of actual working knowledge of estimating and building and a degree. It was odd that I wasn’t given a better look. The interview regarding the position was relatively short. I think the I interviewer felt bad about disregarding my skills and enthusiasm so quickly and turned the conversation to more general conversation. He was a kind man, only missed it when not giving me a closer look. Great company. Hope your daddy is in the business already if you want to work here.
