      Software Engineer Interview

      12 May 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at LoanCrate

      Interview

Very strange interview experience overall. During the live coding portion, at one point, the interviewer accused me of using AI when my IDE was simply autocompleting part of a line of code. The interaction immediately became unnecessarily adversarial. Ironically, after switching to a plain text editor to avoid further confusion, the experience became even more awkward and stressful. Toward the end of the interview, I also asked questions around engineering quality agreements, team standards, and development processes, and the answers were essentially along the lines of “we don’t really have agreements” and “we just need to move fast.” I completely understand startup pressure and moving quickly, but professionalism, emotional intelligence, and mutual respect during interviews still matter. In hindsight, I believe we were probably not a good cultural fit.

Fair interview process When it comes to conducting a fair interview process for developers proficient in Node.js and React, there are a few key things to keep in mind. Firstly, it's important to ensure that all candidates are given an equal opportunity to showcase their skills and experience. This means providing each candidate with the same interview questions and evaluation criteria, as well as giving them sufficient time to prepare and answer each question. Another important aspect of a fair interview process is transparency. Candidates should be informed of the interview process and what to expect beforehand, including the format of the interview, the duration, and any technical requirements. This helps to ensure that candidates are not caught off guard or disadvantaged during the interview. Additionally, it's important to evaluate candidates based on their skills and qualifications, rather than on any biases or assumptions. This means avoiding questions or comments that could be perceived as discriminatory or irrelevant to the job requirements. Overall, a fair interview process for Node.js and React developers should prioritize equal opportunity, transparency, and objective evaluation criteria. By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that all candidates are given a fair chance to showcase their skills and potentially land their dream job.
