I was very excited about the opportunity to join Marsh Furniture Company and contribute to their HR team. My initial conversation with the HR Manager reinforced that excitement—she was warm, professional, and gave a clear overview of the role and team dynamics. Unfortunately, that shifted during my 2 hour interview with the VP of HR. While I was prepared to discuss my qualifications and experiences, the only job-related question I was asked was how I would handle difficult employees. The rest of the conversation veered into unsolicited remarks about politics, race, and homosexuality—topics that were not only irrelevant to the role, but also deeply inappropriate for an interview setting. As a candidate, I expected an environment that reflected professionalism, respect, and inclusivity—especially from someone in HR leadership. Instead, I left the interview feeling uncomfortable and disheartened. The experience significantly changed my perception of the company and ultimately led me to withdraw my interest in the role. I hope Marsh Furniture reflects on how leadership behavior impacts candidate experience and takes steps to create a more inclusive and respectful interview process.
