      Specialized Web Design Interview

      12 Apr 2011
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Richmond, VA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Media General (Richmond, VA) in Jul 2010

      Interview

Initially contact by a consulting company recruiter who connected me to the onsite employee. After a few calls I was invited onsite for an interview that was scheduled for several hours. The first question asked after the obligatory "did you have trouble finding our budling" type questions was about monetary expectations. At that point they should have thanked me for coming out and ended the interview. Instead, I sat through the remainder of the interviews not quite sure that this was a good match for me. I walked away at the end hoping they would not offer the position and thankfully they did not. I followed up with an email and a handwritten thank you, and after not receiving any response, followed up again with an email and a phone call. they did not ever respond which further cemented my decisition that this is not an organziation I want to work with in the next few years. Several times over the next two months I received calls from recruiters excited that I was a "perfect match" for this opening they were trying to fill. Next thing out of their mouth was that the monetary compensation was probably a bit on the low side so we should talk about moeny up front. Their minimum requiremens for this Senior level postion - broad experience in multiple industries, BS degree (MS preferred), and 10+ minimum years (15+ preferred). On paper, I exceeded all of their requirements and felt I could do the job well. I did like the vibe I got from the people I met, so I knew it was not a good match for me. Later I found out there were offering less than $60K/year for this position, which is more closely match to someone who has just graduated or has just a few years experience.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The person hired was going to be resposnible for redsigning all of their web sites. I was shown numerous examples of the current web look and feel and asked what I would do to improve each one, as well as what I would do to provide a familial feel to them as a family of web sites.
