      Menswear Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at NEXT in Jun 2016

      Interview

Phone interview, asked a few questions and said I would be invited to assessment. said she would ring back in a few hours. (She rung back 2 days later). Assessment involved being taken to a part of the store then given a task to do while your every move is scrutinised. I was told to just engage customers, I was handed over to another person who wrote feedback on my performance. She seemed to give me hints in order to succeed, in saying "basically just approach everyone and say are you ok there, and put right any poorly put back clothes" I walked around the section I was in, and did as I was asked. after this, I swapped with the other person being assessed, and went to the shoe section and was told to wait for a customer who needed to try on shoes. She said "you don't need to go for a hard sell, the shoes sell themselves" A customer came, The lady I was with who was watching me ( a different lady for the shoe section) told me to come with her to the stock room to get the shoe in a size 8. I followed her to the stock room, she read out the number on the box, and took the shoes, but she mis-read the number on the side, and took back the wrong pairt of shoes to the customer, So we had to go back, where I then un boxed the shoes and took out the shoe paper and inserts for the man to try on. He put on the shoe and I asked if he would like to try on the other shoe, He said no thanks, and said immediately he would take the shoes. The lady asked me to take the shoes to the woman on the till. that concluded my assessment. I was told I was "not quite there", "needed to ask questions" and that I needed to be "intense" , somewhat contradicting what the second lady had said about the shoes selling themselves. It did not help that the shop was undergoing a refit and the air conditioning had been removed, it was a hot day in June, people were complaining about the heat when I asked if they were ok, and with the nerves of the assessment I was overheating, which did not help. I was given a £10 voucher and told I could not apply again for 3 months.
