      System Engineer Interview

      14 Aug 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Network Doctor (New York, NY) in Aug 2025

      Interview

The job isn't Systems Engineering as the post described; it's more of a Tier 1 - 2 helpdesk role. There was definitely some miscommunication from the recruiter because they mentioned that the role was primarily project based with some occasional end-user support, but being interviewed by the actual team it seems like it's mostly end user support. The interview process was basically an overview of experience and scenario-based troubleshooting like printer, website access issues, etc. They wanted me to do a second panel with the Director but I think after the 1st interview I opted out. A part of the process felt a little dehumanizing; they made you do an assessment (essentially an IQ test) before the interview. I don't think that's a company that you'd wanna work for if you're an actual Systems Engineer with so much more to give to the tech world.

      Question 1

Walk me through troubleshooting a printer that doesn't work for a user.

      Interview

Typical phone screen with recruiter, followed by interview with the MSP team, then two more interviews with the client. Multiple days in-between each interview. Overall a big waste of time & makes you wonder if they even need the position filled.

      Interview

You are contacted by an office manager to set up a date and time. Interview takes place in a conference room with the help desk team lead, a level 2 and a level 3/escalations tech and finally someone from upper management. Questions are mostly behavioral in nature. Interviewers flat out say they’re looking for a cultural fit over someone with the right technical background so there aren’t really any technical questions to prepare for. Follow up for the interview takes about a week. In terms of salary offers, it’ll be hard to break the 50k mark for an entry-level helpdesk position. Starting salaries range between the 45k-47k mark even with decent experience on a resume which is well under market average. Management isn’t really open to negotiate past this range and will pass you over if you try to go above this. Working from office is starting to become mandatory for all new hires with little to no flexibility to work from home despite the tools being there to do this efficiently. The field tech team is short staffed so do not be surprised if you’re asked to do onsite work even if you’re hired to do remote support. Field work would involve putting mileage on your own car and at times using your own tools, as the company is slow to give out company laptops unless you ask for one as well as there being no useful power tools available to work in client server rooms.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

You have a laptop that cannot connect to the internet. How would you troubleshoot this?
