      Software Engineer Interview

      12 Nov 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at OnePay in Aug 2025

      Interview

Recruiter screen, Karat coding screen, system design, STAR, manager interview, then 2 interviews with the C-suite. The technical questions were reasonable and I enjoyed talking to the ICs, but management/C-suite seemed hardass and said multiple times they expected employees to work long hours and ship aggressively to prod. I think that's fine, but the amount of interviews before an offer and the fact that at the end they didn't come close to matching the salary we discussed initially put me off.

      Interview

The interview process consisted of multiple stages, including both technical and coding assessments. It began with a brief HR screening to discuss my background, experience, and interest in the position. After that, I had one or more technical interviews focused on software engineering concepts such as data structures, algorithms, and system design.

      Application

      Interview

I had an initial recruiter screen and then they told me their first round was with Karat. I've never done a Karat interview before so I wasn't sure what to expect. It's 40min of basically reading/debugging code and modifying to pass test cases. I totally bombed it the first time, but Karat allows for a free redo so I did it again and honestly thought I did pretty well. Answered 2 questions and got all test cases to run. I'm not sure how they average the scores or if they pick the better of the 2, but both get sent to the recruiter. I got an auto rejection later that week. Would have liked some feedback.
