I was contacted by Rivian for an interview for Staff BI Engineer. The intial phone call went well. Very basic, they just want to confirm who you are and your resume. This position is located in Normal, Illinois and relocation assistance is provided. Rivian gives the choice that they'll take care of everything or you can receive a lump sum payment of $10K. If you spend less than that, the remainder is yours. The salary is also starting at $125K. The interview with the hiring manager went well and it was over zoom. The hiring manager is newish to managing a data team but his background is engineering. He's very easy to talk too and the interview is a mixture of some basic interview questions and just having a general chat. I prefer these kinds of interviews. He'll go through expectations of the job and what they are looking for. They really want someone that is a pro at SQL and can contribute to code, that's a must. The job is also customer facing so they are really looking for someone that has customer service skills and great communication skills. They use tableau at Rivian so bonus if you have certifications and know source control. There are two additonal rounds of interviews with people that are a more technical in nature, not what this is about as I never heard back after the first round with the hiring manager. The last round is someone from Rivian calling to let you know you got the job and here is the reason why you should accept it. If you decide to go for this roll and you're a pro at SQL and have no issues chatting face to face with people, make sure to also research the housing market in Normal, Illinois. Close to around Normal and Bloomington Illinois you'll find lots of older homes if you want to buy and renting is getting up there in cost. $2K is about the starting price for a decent house to rent. There is some new housing going up to meet demand because of Rivian's hiring but not sure if they've started that development yet. Peoria has some nice places but you'll be communting 40-50 mins but I did find some nice homes and apartments for rent there and its a little cheaper than normal/bloomington but not by much. Overall the two people I chatted with at Rivian were great to talk to and I have no dount Rivian will continue to make improvements to their business.
