The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Spare Labs (Vancouver, BC) in Feb 2026
Interview
I had applied to a few positions with Spare over several months. The company actually invited me to an interview for a position that I hadn't applied to and that hadn't yet been available publicly - the recruiter saw one of my earlier applications and decided I was a potential fit for the Team Lead position.
Which is the first thing I liked about it, as it is quite rare for companies to actually consider you for positions other than those you apply to.
The 1-hour long interview with the recruiter happened in a few days after that and left a positive feeling. Usually screenings with recruiters are just about regular bookkeeping topics - do you have a work permit, what are you salary expectations etc. But this conversation went way beyond that. It was still about topics that are somewhat regular during interviews - like managerial style etc - but this conversation felt more like an interesting discussion than covering regular check boxes.
The 3d positive part was the interviewer providing me with quite a detailed explanation for the rejection. Yes, the company decided not to proceed with me. Yes, I do not fully agree with the business priorities that resulted in this rejection. But I recognize them as valid priorities still. And the rejection makes sense based on those priorities.
What is even more important for this positive interview rating - is that companies almost never provide any justification behind a rejection. Even if asked directly. So Spare stands out by a wide margin.
