      Director Interview

      26 Sept 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at TechSoup (San Francisco, CA)

      Interview

The minute you walk in the door of TechSoup, note how you feel. If anything like my experience, I couldn't have gone from feeling more elated and confident to breathing a strangling black fog that something was terribly and irreparably wrong with this culture. The folks on the worker bee end of the spectrum seemed destroyed, like they were caught in the tough end of an abuser-abused cycle. Meanwhile, the folks on the upper level exhibited traits that told me they bordered on tyrannical when a small dose of stress set in. I've known about TechSoup for well over ten years, and have purchased their products for organizations I have managed. But this is not the same organization it used to be. Chicken or the egg, who knows, but if it were me, I'd run. I interviewed for a director position with eight key individuals, separately. It was the most disjointed and scattered process involving 'leaders' who didn't take the time to actually read my resume. I was personally insulted by three different remarks one of their most senior figures said to me. TechSoup needs to learn how to treat their candidates. They should also learn how to treat their customers; more than once they mocked the nonprofits they serve who "had no clue about technology." During my final interview, I was given a tour of the space, including the general break room. I stepped in and saw pale, lifeless bodies unable to pull together a return smile. It felt so sad and toxic inside I don't know how anyone actually managed to swallow a carrot stick. All around, this is a fearful and joyless joint. A revenue model that used to sustain is now in deep jeopardy from market competition. While TechSoup used to be one of the only beneficiaries of corporate rebates and packages, it's now lost its place in the race. Carefully read the other reviews on this site; I did, yet admittedly failed to take heed. Don't make my mistake. You deserve better in your employer and in your workplace.

As an organization that constantly strives to improve its processes, products, and services, we value feedback. Within the last 60 days, we have significantly streamlined our recruiting cycle as well as rebranded our office and facilities, and have several exciting opportunities on our career’s page. TechSoup’s foundation is its great people – smart, passionate, and committed to serving the social sector and eager to make a difference in civil society. As TechSoup evolves, we are confident that if we stay focused on our vision, our mission, and the enormous potential to radically improve our delivery to those we serve — we will be an even better organization in the future.
