I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Two Barrels (Spokane, WA) in Dec 2021
Interview
The interview process took a couple weeks. First there was an email, followed up with an online test which was fairly basic. Then came a webcam interview which lasted 2 hours. They asked about my background, told me about the company, answered my questions, etc.
Based on what I heard, they basically use Wordpress only for the admin panel. They do not like you knowing how to use other plugins or other functionality that Wordpress offers. They honestly seemed extremely elitist and very cliquey.
If you interview here, make sure they know that you hate using any kind of plugins and that you would much rather code everything by hand. It doesn't matter if you know how to extend plugins, use hooks, actions, etc.. I don't think they even know what any of that is. Once they realize you use plugins they will deny your application - even if you are extremely qualified, have decades worth of experience with Wordpress, other CMS/frameworks, and custom PHP.
I don't know they they even use Wordpress. They have a ton of wordpress sites yet don't know about multisites.. they would rather manually code and maintain everything separately even though all of their sites all fall under their parent company.
I feel like they have a hard time finding people to hire because they are looking for someone with a specific skill set but then turn away people who actually know how to use that skill set.
They asked a lot of questions about SCSS/SASS, loops, etc.. they wanted me to explain why I would use them and then to tell them the exacting coding of how to do it in the interview.
We are sorry to hear you had a negative interview experience with us. We do leverage Wordpress almost exclusively for our websites and rely on custom themes and PHP rather than plugins to produce the most tailored Wordpress sites we can. We use plugins where they make sense for our structure, but our unique approach to managing 100's of websites can make it difficult to implement things like multisites.
We realize our approach to front-end development isn't for everyone, which is why we try our best to be transparent about the technologies we use and don't use.
