I applied online. The process took 5 months. I interviewed at United Nations in Dec 2016
Interview
I applied online through Inspira, the UN's job portal, in mid-September 2016. I received an invitation to take a filter test in October and a written (substantive) test in November. In December, I was invited for a panel interview which included the hiring manager and 4 staff members, three of which were involved in carrying out the interview. Toward the end of December, I was told I was selected for the position. They informed me that the contract from HR could be ready anywhere between two weeks to two months later. In late February, I received an automatically generated message from Inspira advising me that the job opening had been cancelled and received no further information or feedback from either the staff members involved in the months-long hiring process or human resources.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
The interview consisted of competency-based interview questions such as, "describe a time you were on a successful team. What was your role in the team? Describe a problem the team faced and how you solved it." Each interviewer was in charge of asking questions related to the three competencies listed in the job posting. In my case, since the role required fluency in both English and Spanish, two interviewers asked questions in Spanish and the third one asked their questions in English. Since the questions will always be related to the three competencies in the job posting, it is a good idea to prepare potential answers for these three competencies.
It was a competency based interview. First they asked how knowledgable I was about the subjects the department was working on. Then, they asked me about give examples about how I contributed to the data visualization, data analysis.

The interview was very straight forward. The interviewer asked my reason for applying and then asked several questions in line with a competency-based interview, which is standard for the UN.

I did a short 30min call for a research fellowship position which was more informal than I expected. The interview was with just the research manager. It was a very short turn around, probably because they needed assistance on the research project asap.
