The Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at UCL is one of the UK’s largest and most diverse departments. We are proud to host internationally renowned research groups across multiple sites, with staff and students working at the intersection of physics, engineering, medicine, physiology, computer science, and mathematics.
As a global leader in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering research and education, our department fosters close collaborations with clinicians, practitioners, and scientists in major teaching hospitals. This enables our researchers to remain at the forefront of healthcare engineering and allows our students to learn about the latest innovations directly from leading experts in the field.
Our mission is to advance cutting-edge research that develops new technologies and methods for diagnosing, treating, and managing diseases through medical imaging, physiological monitoring, and implantable devices. Additionally, we offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs.

We invite applications from highly motivated individuals who are current or prospective doctoral (PhD) students at UCL. Students must be enrolled on an MPhil programme to be eligible to apply.
PGTA roles are offered under an average-hour contract, meaning your total agreed hours will be evenly distributed over the duration of the contract. This arrangement ensures that you receive consistent, prorated monthly payments throughout your employment period. All new PGTAs will start at the first spinal point of Grade 6. PGTAs with prior experience from the previous academic session will advance by one spinal point.
At UCL, employed PGTAs are entitled to sick leave and pay, as set out in the Conditions of Service for Research, Teaching and Professional Services Staff. PGTAs qualify for sick pay, which is automatically included in their normal monthly salary as they are on an Averaged Hours contract. Additionally, annual leave pay is also included automatically. HR Services will automatically calculate the payment due for any leave accrued for the hours worked monthly for Averaged Hours contracts.
