Trainline – Why Work For Us?

Trainline is Europe’s leading train and coach app. We work with 220 rail and coach companies to offer our customers travel to thousands of destinations in and across 45 countries.

Our team numbers more than 600 people and more than 40 nationalities, including 300+ travel tech specialists and engineers

But that’s enough stats! We’re about more than numbers. We’ve got to where we are today because of our people – they’re the best. Our teams of innovative thinkers work hard to anticipate our customers’ needs and solve them, because we really care.

Things move at a fast pace across our three offices, in London, Edinburgh and Paris. We’re all tuned into our vision – to bring together all rail, coach and other travel services into one simple experience so customers can get the best prices and smart, real-time travel information on the go.

We love our work, but we’re a social bunch too. As well as the standard after-work drinks and weekly pizzas, we let our hair down with fun things like yoga classes, games nights and bring-your-dog-to-work days.

Community spirit’s important to us too, so we work closely with local charities, and set aside days to give them a little of our time – whether it’s doing some gardening or helping with fundraisers, we all roll up our sleeves and pitch in.

We’re the people who make sure all our content and campaigns are in tune with our brand, whether it’s on the big screen, or the tiny one (your phone!). Our product saves people money and time, making their lives easier, so we want to spread the word. The boundaries are yours to push and there’s always an opportunity to grow and broaden in your role.

As a team that works with a lot of other departments, we’re experts at integrated working. Everyone’s ideas can be added to the pot and we can all put our heads together to think commercially. Our work is driven by data, it’s the insight behind our big ideas, and helps us constantly evolve, identify and speak to our customer base so we can offer them what they need at the right time.

Our established tech team are the experts who build scalable solutions that make a world-class customer experience for our app and websites. We stay on top of the trends, naturally, but we’re not about style over substance. The latest tools are great, but they’ll only get a thumbs-up from us if they can genuinely help us to help our customers.

It’s not just technology we invest in. We really look after our people, because giving them the right tools and teaching unlocks innovation. So, we actively encourage wider learning, training and certifications, and we give our teams time to focus on projects they’re really passionate about.

Price Prediction – one of our great app features, which uses data science to pinpoint the best time to buy your ticket – began on our Product team’s drawing board. Constant innovation is part of our team’s DNA. Our main goal is to customise app functionality, to give our users a truly seamless experience. Agile working means new ideas can get released within just one week. And, our build, test and learn mentality means we’re always looking to improve.

You’ll work at speed, closely and collaboratively, in a team of Product Owners, Designers, Engineers, User Researchers and Data Scientists. You’ll have a hunger for data-driven results and you’ll be unafraid to bring new and disruptive ideas to the table.

I worked at Trainline full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -Smart and friendly people
-Company culture (company-wide communication, flexible working, pizza and beer Fridays, fruits and breakfast, socials, etc.)
    -Career progression

    Cons

Data: the access to it, its accuracy, its richness. It's hard to work in performance marketing when the impact of initiatives can't be easily or precisely measured. Senior stakeholders seem to be aware of the problem but not much has improved during my time here. I'm also not very optimistic about it improving in the short-medium term.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up! Listening to customers and employees alike, building a great work place culture.

    Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Trainline.

    Interview

I got introduced to thetrainline.com through a recruiter. After reviewing my CV they wanted to know more through email about my experience with Agile. I answered with 5/6 lines replies to each of their 4 questions and they came back with more questions about agile and so this time I replied with 30/40 lines per question.

Next I got scheduled for a first phone interview where I was asked a few technical questions (not too difficult) and again I was requested to explain how I work in an agile way in my current company (all over again with the same questions I had already replied in detail on my email).

After this step I got assigned some code to comment on and improve with unit tests, etc... I completed the excercise the same day and posted to their shared repository. Nothing too difficult, there were clear design issues with the implementation.

A few days later I was notified by the recruiter that they didn't like my solution so they would not proceed further. I was a bit surprised, I asked for more details from thetrainline.com but were offered none.

In the emails that we exchanged (through the recruiter) they managed to misspell both my first name and my surname, which I've found a bit careless on their side.

    Interview Questions

    • I didn't get to the face to face interview. The phone screening questions were fairly standard about OO, database, data structures.   Answer Question
