Pros

Excellent health care benefits; generous paid leave (if you are a 'regular' employee; PTO for 'temporary' staff is about on par with low-wage service work); defined-benefit pension; pay is above average for SOME positions (but not if you have an advanced degree)

Cons

The 'perks' are far outweighed by the down sides: Inconsistent or non-existent management despite absurd number of "managers"; abusive work culture; rampant misogyny and racism, including quid pro quo and pervasive hostile work environment harassment; poor internal communications; absolutely no opportunities for advancement or career development; internal politics and competition undercut institutional goals; terrible HR practices; senior management and those with power appear to have nothing but contempt for staff; staff have absolutely no power to move program; work hours can be excessive; oppressive and depressing work environment. Recent "restructuring" to manage major budget shortfalls has created more problems than solutions. People are afraid to voice criticisms of management and culture for fear of retaliation. There is also a lot of uncertainty about future job and pay security due to political attacks and mismanagement.

Abysmal

Pros

Salary is okay, but the benefits are great.

Cons

-Leadership often seems more interested in ceremonial wins than real victories. -Employees sometimes receive treatment that the organization would shun corporations for engaging in. -New employees start with a three-year contract that has a probationary period attached, but don't be surprised if the period gets extended and you somehow never receive notice. -Absolutely the worst internal political culture I've ever experienced. Employees are subject to the whims of any national, state, or local union leaders they have contact with, which becomes untenable when those leaders are in conflict with each other. -People's economic policies may be uber-progressive, but be prepared to deal with some really retrograde views from some of the old guard on other issues (especially the environment and gay rights).

Good Benefits, Terrible Workplace Culture

Pros

Good benefits! Healthcare is amazing, and a lot of vacation time. Surprisingly, no unlimited sick. Also, for a union building, work hours are longer than you might expect.

Cons

Terrible workplace culture. For example, massive bureaucracy, lazy long-term employees, excessive layers of management, little chance for advancement, horrible handling of HR cases, old-school office layout, and tons of people on power trips to the moon.
