Pros

Every day was different and interesting, I'll give them that much.

Cons

When I worked at Agam, my boss was automatically cc’d on every email I received. This is not a good workplace practice -- generally the idea is that an employer hires people it trusts to do their jobs competently and responsibly, trains them appropriately, reviews their work as needed, and addresses any problems by talking to them. Typically “we will spy on everything in your inbox” is not the way this gets done.

Pros

The actual nature of the work was, for the most part, interesting. I got to work closely with the industrial designers and creatively come up with solutions for each client’s exhibit - often, clients wanted to build exhibits that seemed impossible at first, but we’d always find a solution. The teamwork and collaboration aspect of my job was really enjoyable. My supervisor was a good person as well, and always had my back in tough situations.

Cons

First, let me say that AGAM likes to hire people straight out of college. This is probably because they know that no one else familiar with workplace norms would put up with the shockingly unprofessional, infantilizing culture. On my first day, I was told that “we’re a family here.” I learned the hard way that this was code for: “there is a lot of drama and you will be sucked right into it.” Our “HR department” was a joke, so good luck getting anywhere with complaints. The new CEO is all about money, where it used to be about finding creative solutions for client’s problems. This led to project coordinators turning into salespeople, which is basically what the job is now. It’s not at all what I signed up for at the time. We were given sales quotas and, at the time I left, no one on the team had ever successfully managed to meet one of them. We were constantly made to feel as if the company was in danger of going under if we didn’t make $X per month. People were fired without notice. Turnover was high, morale was low. During the month of Christmas, of all times, we were told we had to work an additional hour each day with no additional form of compensation. Merry Christmas, right? On my birthday, I was told it was mandatory for ME to bring in desserts for everyone else. Don’t birthdays typically work the other way around? The most horrifying thing is that, as a project coordinator, every email you receive is automatically CC’d to your supervisor. Yes, you read that right: every incoming email. My supervisor himself was great, but this practice showed that AGAM management as a whole does not trust their employees to perform their jobs without micromanagement. Good managers trust that their employees are adults who have been sufficiently trained to do their job correctly. I will end by saying that I did the math and I got six days of PTO a year when I started. Six. And that’s sick time and vacation time combined. Run far away.

AGAM Group Response

Thank you for taking some time to give your feedback to the company. We appreciate that people have different experiences and we’re sorry yours had some difficulty. We want people to be happy and fulfilled at work and when that doesn’t happen, it’s important to understand why. Agam is rooted in delivering innovation in engineering and manufacturing with quick turnaround times. This is the company’s heritage and still the backbone of what we do. This doesn’t happen without talented people collaborating well together. We acknowledge that the pace of our work can be stressful at times but we also know it can be immensely satisfying when we solve difficult challenges for our customers, which we love to do. We strongly feel that our work during the pandemic shows the true resolve of our company. While our industry literally disappeared because trade shows and events were cancelled indefinitely, we were able to end 2020 with just a modest decrease in sales compared to 2019, serving completely new markets with over 60 new products developed. This is compared to most in our industry who experienced revenue declines of 70% and higher. We feel this speaks to the company culture of pulling together, innovating and delivering. We’re so very proud of what our team did to realize success in a once-in-a-lifetime world-wide crisis. As for some of your specific comments, we wanted to clarify some things. Like many companies, sales teams often have targets to reach on a weekly or monthly basis. This is something Agam really didn’t do in the past but something that’s common for most companies in order to track progress. At Agam, these are set at targets. Sometimes we hit them and sometimes we don’t. The important thing is to make sure we’re working efficiently and practicing common sales tactics like great customer service and good follow-up. We’re sorry you felt these to be unhelpful but it is important for us to track activity as good business practice. For you, it’s clear it didn’t serve as intended. We will look at this to make sure the intent is properly communicated going forward. As for our PTO, what you stated does not reflect our policy. If for some reason we did not communicate the specifics for time off properly, we apologize. Agam has been in business for 38 years and we’re proud of the many people at the company that have over 10 and 20 years of service. That said, we know there are things to work on continuously and as we grow, we are always open to feedback so we can improve as an organization. Thanks again for your feedback.
