Great mission, bad culture

Recommend

Business outlook

Pros

Great mission. The work was incredibly rewarding

Cons

The culture in my department was very toxic, stemming from toxic leadership. By the time I left, turnover was at an all-time high due to low pay and emotional burnout. No opportunities for growth. Personally, I also believe, after seeing many things firsthand, that the ASPCA wastes donor money in many unnecessary ways. Much of it is spent well, but much of it is not.

Pros

1. Salary is competitive for people with graduate degrees. 2. Benefits are decent. 3. You can make an immediate impact that benefits animals (sometimes). 4. People working on the ground (not leadership) are inspiring and some of the most talented and hardworking people you will meet (too bad leadership exploits them!)

Cons

1) Culture: TERRIBLE place for anyone who is not a white, affluent, straight person with strong ties to christian/classist values. 2) Leadership: Absolute worst CEO and executive leadership team. I cannot stress this enough. Leadership is an absolute joke. Their ways of thinking are outdated and out of touch. They don't know how to run meetings. They have standards and values rooted in the 1990s corporate workplace. Not receptive to feedback. 3) HR: Terrible: no support for employees at at all; treat employees poorly. 4) Senior Managers: unqualified, bitter, easily threatened unreliable, pretentious. 5) Professional Development/Career Advancement: No opportunities to advance in your role and senior leaders who want to "move up" in the org will do everything they can do prevent you succeeding because they are easily threatened and want the minimal opportunities for advancement for themselves. Senior managers/directors see productive employees as a threat to them moving up the leader ladder. Worst offenders at the org: Leaders/Managers in Humane Law Enforcement, Strategy and Research and Legal Advocacy and Investigations, the People Team.

Pros

Working with Dr. Niestat and whole CE team

Cons

•Toxic leadership and favoritism. Management frequently displays unprofessional and immature behavior. Rather than encouraging collaboration, they foster a culture of gossip, retaliation, and selective accountability. •Hostile work environment. After raising legitimate concerns professionally, I was accused of being “disrespectful” and even told I “betrayed” my supervisor comments that were emotionally manipulative and inappropriate for the workplace. •Unequal treatment. Time-off and scheduling policies are inconsistently applied. One team member regularly had their remote days and requests approved with no issue, while mine were revoked without warning after I asked for fairness. •Inappropriate comments. I experienced creepy, unsolicited remarks from a coworker, which went unaddressed even after being reported. •Poor communication. There was no formal training for new systems, responsibilities were unclear, and management often ignored follow-ups or feedback. •Lack of support. Even during personal loss (e.g., putting down a pet), I was not informed of available bereavement days by my own manager.

Pros

Loved by coworkers. Knowing I did what I could to help animals made it worthwhile.

Cons

The staff here at the midlevel are true animal advocates. The CEO and leadership where there for their million dollar salaries. Look up the CEO's salary and the leadership salaries on the 990s before you decide to work here for 60K a year. :)
