Pros

There are NO pros to working here.

Cons

All seemed great at first, happy smiles and warm welcomes, but that soon changed. Within my early days of employment I witnessed a fellow employee get savagely fired without warning. From this moment on, every second was filled with the fear that I was going to be the next to go. Over time, I realised I wasn’t the only one living with this trepidation; the unpredictable and irrational behaviour of the directors makes them completely unapproachable, with even managers who have survived years in the company being terrified to approach the directors for fear of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. This company is a family run business, which sounds great until you realise that the directors were handed the company by their parents and do not have the training or skills to successfully manage employees. Belittling employees and making staff cry in an open plan office was not uncommon. Maybe this is why the staff turnover at this company is extortionately high. For the entire time I wasted at this company I was never formally provided with the details of a Human Resources contact or the process should I have any issues within the organisation. I learnt through other employees that the HR was outsourced to a good friend of one of the directors. This explains why no matters could be (and never were) raised. Dare to say something and you were sure to be fired. The only regulation they seem to be aware of is that you can be fired from the company for ANY reason if you have worked at a company for less than two years, with no standing for unfair dismissal. If you have worked at Access Hardware for more than two years and they decide they don’t want you anymore they will “manage you out of the company”. There is no happy way out. There are numerous recruitment agencies that won’t work with this company due to their rash firing customs and unprofessional manner. During a phone call (which the whole open plan office could hear) a recruitment agency was asked if a prospective customer service employee (who had the perfect CV for the role) had a foreign accent due to concerns of sounding like an overseas call centre. The hours you are contracted are insignificant. If you arrive to work less than 15 minutes BEFORE your start time you are considered late. An extra 30 minutes of work at the start of the day before your start time is the least that is expected. Don’t even consider leaving at your contracted finish time. Regardless of out-of-work commitments you need to meet, leaving on time will be met with raised eyebrows and grounds for disciplinary action for poor time management. Be sure not to ask questions, ever. This will be seen as weakness and used against you for your entire time at the company. Don’t worry about needing to come up with creative ideas or suggestions, these are sure to be shot down without consideration. The all-controlling directors will also not trust you with any form of responsibility or creative freedom in your role. Be prepared to be given absolutely zero recognition for any work you do. Chances are your manager will take it to the directors and neglect to credit your name. Your manager may tell you privately how great your work is but you can be certain that they will not back you up if questioned by a director, the fear of saying a word that doesn’t agree with a director comes before all loyalty. You won’t be able to make any friends with other employees. If directors spot you talking too much to someone they will manipulate everything to prevent friendship, the times you are told to go on lunch will suddenly change and projects you were working on together will be reassigned. I witnessed this happen multiple times throughout my employment. I hope that this review can save at least one person from working for this disgraceful organisation. N.B. Access Hardware own a company called Handle King which is run from the same office under the dictatorship of the same directors. Do not be fooled into working for either company.

Dear Ex employee, It is unfortunate that you have chosen to use Glass Door to anonymously air your frustrations after leaving our employment, however allow me to address just some of the misleading inaccuracies below. 1) "An employee was savagely fired without warning." We are a growing family business with around 25 employees. All staff are treated the same and if any behaviour is considered inappropriate, for whatever reason, we try to address this informally initially. If this behaviour continues, then unfortunately disciplinary action needs to be taken which did, in the case you mention, lead to dismissal. Our disciplinary process is available to all staff in the company handbook. 2) "Directors are unapproachable" I’m sorry you felt this way. Although we are a small business we do have a line management structure in place which is explained to every employee on their start date. If you felt you couldn’t speak with your line manager, then there are other managers available to speak to should you have had any concerns. The current Directors have grown the business from 4 to 25 employees, a fact we are most proud of. 3) "I was never formally provided with the details of a Human Resources contact or the process should I have any issues within the organisation" Before every employee starts work for us we give out a self-explanatory document named “Who Does What”, which each employee is required to sign a form to say they have read it. We also go through this document on your first day of work and the document is displayed in the main office as a reminder for all. Also, we provide a handbook, which again you need to sign to say you have read and is available to any employee at any time if there is confusion over the correct process. 4) "The hours you are contracted are insignificant. If you arrive to work less than 15 minutes BEFORE your start time you are considered late. An extra 30 minutes of work at the start of the day before your start time is the least that is expected. Don’t even consider leaving at your contracted finish time." Yes, timekeeping is important to us as a small business. As we explain to all employees before starting, we have team meetings 5 minutes before your official start time and it is expected that all employees finish their work before leaving the office. 5) "Be sure not to ask questions, ever. This will be seen as weakness and used against you for your entire time at the company. " It is actually one of our company values to encourage learning and sharing. Our values are displayed in the office, framed on the wall. 6) "Don’t worry about needing to come up with creative ideas or suggestions, these are sure to be shot down without consideration. " Creativity is also one of our Values. At the end of every month we award a star of the month prize for employees who have best reflected the company values. Unfortunately Access Hardware and small family businesses are not the right fit for everyone. We are currently looking for mature, trustworthy team players, who work well without supervision.

Pros

Not much to be said as there aren't any.

Cons

A terrible company to work for. All seemed well at first. Smiley faces, helpful, then from nowhere carnage at Management level, very unprofessional. They have no idea what they are doing and how the company is being perceived by others. Bad management, terrible leadership (non existent). There is no accountability for anyone’s actions or mistakes and when presented with concerns or ideas it’s brushed off. Managers often lose sight of what’s important and should be trained in HR rules and regulations. Don't spend any time here. I would not work here if it was the last company on earth.

Pros

Literally none. Terrible work ethic and culture at Access Hardware/Handle King.

Cons

Before the management pass me off as 'the same individual who keeps leaving bad reviews' - I can assure you, I'm not. And the bad reviews are left by multiple people, not one 'bad apple' as the 5-star review below implies (definitely left by management). I worked here for a mere 3 months before leaving (before I would be fired as they love firing people). First thing I noticed, they literally hire kids (apprentices) to avoid paying actual wages yet demand they work like dogs. It was awful to witness. I witnessed a marketing apprentice only ever get trained in amazon selling. Honestly - awful. I knew I wanted to leave in my first month when I caught a chest infection so had to have a few days off sick. When I returned I was pulled into the office and got called 'disappointed'. For being sick?! I agree with everything the bad comments say - you are shamed for leaving on time. I have never, ever come across such a toxic management or workplace in all my working career - and I am 28, not an apprentice. I'm leaving this now as I was made aware that people finally told this company how bad they are to work for and I cannot pass on seeing management CLEARLY leaving the positive reviews. They go through employees like wildfire. I was there for 3 months and I believe they fired 3 people during this time. I couldn't even tell you who made these bad reviews as I know so many would have. NOT one bad apple. Honestly, avoid this company like the plagued. I found amazing employment after leaving these and so did others who either left or got fired. They are NOT the 'lovely, family business they portray'.
