Pros

Altana is filled with many talented and smart individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Individual contributors are provided the autonomy to solve challenging puzzles, making the work highly fulfilling. This autonomy extends to decision-making, empowering individuals to make significant contributions to customer outcomes. The company’s product vision is ambitious and has successfully rallied the support of reputable investors, partners and customers. Commercially, the company has experienced drastic success in the recent period and has delivered considerable value and earned huge amounts of trust with its government, logistics and enterprise clients.

Cons

Employees are expected to carve their own path with little direction and support from others. This isn't intentional, but rather the consequence of a company evolving quickly and tackling many complex and high stakes puzzles at the same time. This rapid pace leaves little room for the company to focus on people development, with a huge tendency to prioritize outcomes. There is huge intolerance for underperformance, which leads to frequent dismissals, which has hurt team morale.

Pros

Total intellectual honesty honesty at every level of the business. Highly rational and focused teams solving challenges with genuine support and autonomy. Driven and experienced operators, being hired for EQ over IQ. Top down leadership is genuinely focused on value creation, not just value capture.

Cons

Way less than you would expect from a 3 year old startup. No challenge is insurmountable with the team that is being built. Nothing feels like a systemic or existential threat.

Retaliatory and territorial

Pros

Some smart individuals Good mission ideals

Cons

Leadership is retaliatory, smug, and doesn't want to hear the advice of the experts they've brought on, praising the people who are acting as 'yes men'. They gaslight and fire employees for poor execution or interpretation when the leadership is wholly responsible for causing communication breakdowns and contradictory statements. They also need to be involved in every single chat communication, making it frustratingly disruptive and difficult for teams to move quickly. Engineering leadership’s resistance to playing well with others and hoarding power has created an imbalance that makes it hard for non-engineering teams to build good products together with the engineers. No one on the executive leadership team has experience building a product platform, but they won't listen to the people they've hired to do the job. The company culture is highly toxic and combative, with too much hierarchy for a company of its size. They've created a culture where it benefits highly territorial employees to gatekeep knowledge, burned a lot of bridges with employees, and have a completely ass-backwards style of management. Extremely noticeable lack of gender and racial diversity. This is unacceptable in today's world, and it's clear that diversity and inclusion are not priorities for the leadership, and their 'vision' for making a more transparent and equitable supply chain is more about serving their self-righteousness egos than doing good. Healthcare and benefits are less important if you are considering an early stage startup, but even at this stage of a company, they are behind the times. One might as well pay for everything out of pocket because that's the same experience.
