Strong Mission, But a Culture That Undermines It

Pros

The mission is genuinely impactful—helping clinicians save time and improve patient outcomes is meaningful work. The product is innovative and addresses a real need in the healthcare system.

Cons

I joined the company excited by the mission and energised by the potential to contribute to meaningful work in the health tech space. But that enthusiasm quickly gave way to concern, as the reality of the internal culture became clear. While the company presents itself as a place where passionate people thrive, the reality is far more challenging. Burnout is common, turnover is high, and the work environment is structured more around control than trust. Employees are expected to put in long hours, take on responsibilities outside of their role, and regularly justify even the smallest pauses in their day. The message throughout the company is that there's "no room for ego," yet any form of questioning, feedback, or vulnerability is discouraged. Rather than fostering a collaborative, supportive atmosphere, fear and silence take over. Many people keep their heads down to avoid being the next in line for public criticism or sudden dismissal. Despite an intensive interview process, new team members are not given space to grow or settle in. From day one, there's a need to prove yourself constantly—often through daily written check-ins and close monitoring. The high expectations aren't matched with the support or autonomy required to meet them. When challenges inevitably arise, the response is often to shift blame to the individual. There's little evidence of leadership reflecting on whether internal processes, culture, or management style might be part of the issue. Instead, the assumption seems to be that the person wasn’t the right fit—no matter how many times that story repeats. Even in a mission-driven business, how people are treated day to day matters. A company’s culture should support and uplift its team—not leave them feeling undervalued, isolated, or fearful. If you’re considering joining, I strongly recommend speaking with multiple former employees to get a clear picture of what it's really like to work here. No role is worth compromising your wellbeing.

Thank you for sharing your reflections. I want you to know that we take this feedback seriously. We know that alongside our meaningful mission, the way people experience work at Anima is just as important. As a fast-growing startup, our culture can feel more intense than at larger, slower-moving companies. While this pace has helped us innovate rapidly and deliver impact for clinicians and patients, we acknowledge it has also created challenges around resourcing, onboarding, and support. We’re working hard to address these areas as we grow. This includes: 1) Scaling Sustainably: We’ve been hiring more quickly to make sure our headcount matches the pace of growth, so teams are properly resourced. 2) Better Onboarding & Support: We now have even more structured 30-60-90 day onboarding plans, so new joiners have the time and space to learn, grow, and feel comfortable settling in. 3) Benefits & Wellbeing: Guided by working groups and company-wide input, we’ve expanded our benefits to match world-class startup expectations. This includes private healthcare, a workplace nursery scheme, a $1,000 annual personal-development budget, an improved remote-work setup allowance, and more team get-togethers (in addition to two offsites each year). 4) Hybrid Connection: We’ve signed a lease for a London office for those who enjoy in-person collaboration and relationship-building, while continuing to support flexible ways of working. 5) Encouraging Feedback & Reflection: We’ve introduced new ways to share feedback, both openly and anonymously, so we can continually learn and improve as a leadership team. Culture is never “finished”. It evolves with the company. We’re committed to building a workplace that not only pursues an ambitious mission, but also empowers, supports, and trusts the people who make it possible.

Pros

What brought me to Anima was the mission of using AI to significantly benefit human wellbeing as well as being at an exceptionally high growth organisation. Everything at Anima is pointed towards ultimately supporting patient outcomes at scale, and the mission runs throughout each decision that seems to get made. As a sales person it is great to be in an organisation where you can learn, develop and earn but also do so with a solution that you are confident is making a difference. Anima is a small team and currently remote, with a London office in the works, but regardless the CEO puts a lot of effort into maintaining the culture - which is everything to him. There are global offsites multiple times a year to get together and the team really does work together well. The best thing I would say about Anima is the agency you get within the business to influence and make decisions. It is extremely flat hierarchically and there is genuinely a feeling that the best idea will win out, and we will test and learn. It genuinely is a great place to work, and to have gotten to our scale primarily through inbound leads and referrals speaks to the level of fanaticism our customers have.

Cons

Like any high growth startup there are high standards and expectations at Anima. However, I don't think that these are unreasonable, just simply a factor of being at an organisation that does genuinely want to make an impact and grow.

Pros

I was initially thinking of sharing why joining Anima was the best choice of my professional career. I could write about how the work is deeply rewarding. How the people are better than anyone I’ve worked with before. Or how I have autonomy and trust to solve interesting and important problems. I could also write about the fact there’s a clear vision for where we’re going and why. That there’s a low-meeting culture that allows for lots of focus time. Or that there are truly memorable offsites around the world. And all of that would be true — joining Anima was the best choice of my professional career! But more than that, joining Anima was one of the best choices of my personal life. First, I’ve found real purpose. It’s hard to describe, but before Anima I always felt like I was missing something. I’d spend my free time working on side projects or trying to learn a new technology. Now, if I do those things, it’s because I want to, not because I feel I need to. The sense of fulfilment I get from my work makes me feel content. Second, I’ve become comfortable running towards pain and taking on challenges I previously avoided — travelling on my own, having difficult conversations with loved ones, and addressing a serious injury (going to group pilates for the first time was legitimately terrifying). Third, I’ve met a group of people unlike any I’ve met before. They’re kind, driven, and incredibly talented. I’ve always felt a little out of place in previous friendship groups, but at Anima I feel like I’ve found my crew. I see them on weekends, travel the world with them, and have so many incredible memories with all of them. Last, I’ve learned to become a first-principles thinker, which has drastically changed how I make decisions. For example, this helped me plan the best possible wedding! This learning alone has likely changed my life for the better. I’ll end by saying this: Anima won’t be for everyone — the other reviews on here make that fairly obvious. But if you can thrive here, you’ll find real purpose, genuine impact, personal growth, and a truly supportive crew.

Cons

The company’s growth means you simply can’t implement every feature request, patch every bug, or resolve every customer support ticket. It’s not often talked about, but the emotional weight of that — feeling like you’re letting people down — can be significant. It’s a double-edged sword. You’ll be working on a product that can (and does) have real impact on the lives of both NHS staff and patients. And that’s great. But it also comes with a huge sense of responsibility. If you’re someone who cares deeply, it can definitely keep you up at night.
