Pros

All the obvious pros - you can save money, keep a healthy life style, have great time off, flexible working, travel the world going to beautiful places. The community is fantastic. Some of the best times I've had have been as a result of working for Backroads.

Cons

As a European your health case is awful and management tries to sell you the benefits of working for a French company. In general they try to spin everything as great and don't take ownership of the employment related issues of the people out in the field. Being expected to drink the Cool-aid was one of the most irritating things. But, you know what you are getting, it's a job after all and it isn't going to be perfect. A lot of the employees expected too much from their employer. The Management have an bad habit of trying to blur the lines of managers and friends and it doesn't do them well.

Pros

The people who work at Backroads are fabulous. As a Trip Leader I felt like I had found 'my tribe', like minded people who valued exceptional customer service and the outdoor lifestyle. Working both in the office and in the field I have gained an insight into both worlds of Backroads and find both to be wonderful, from remote winter work through to leading trips in the summer season, being employed at Backroads opens a lot of doors and a number of different opportunities. The most valuable element at Backroads is there commitment to promoting from within, if you fancy an elevated role, the company give you a chance to learn and grow, many companies don't do that.

Cons

The commitment as a Trip Leader is a commitment to a lifestyle, this means you may be away from home for long periods of time and being guest facing six days of the week. It could be draining on your social energy if you are not prepared for it.

Thank you for your review. It is great to hear from former Trip Leaders. Our field staff do work long, hard hours during our busy season but also get extended breaks in the off season to recharge. We appreciate all that you do!
