Exciting technology, amazing team of people

    Pros

Base4 is a start up company with an incredibly talented and friendly team – you won’t find a better group of people to work with. The technology is exciting and the work is challenging and varied. Priorities can change relatively quickly as the technology develops, problems get solved and new ideas continuously arise, making it a dynamic environment that rewards hard work and creativity. There’s a genuine opportunity to be part of creating something amazing, which surely doesn’t come along very often.

    Cons

Relatively fast pace of change may not be for everyone and can result in a steep learning curve. Everyone is expected to make a meaningful contribution, so don’t expect to sit back and coast.

    Good place to work but...

    Pros

The pro is definitely the team, which is a bunch of young, extremely friendly, international and dynamic people. It is an exciting place to work, with interesting projects progressing at a nice pace.

    Cons

The CEO. Although he has improved since the first reviews in 2015, this guy still behaves like a 4 year old. That goes from slightly annoying everyday behaviour, like riding a scooter in the office, keeping his cycling gear on all day and occasionally being a bit abrupt to some people, to more serious stuff. He would decide one day that we should work on a project that is going to make millions and drop it 2 months later just at the time when it is just about to work. He would occasionnaly sack people for no reason (or because he does not like them?) or give a project to someone because he likes him, not because he is the most qualified. Last bit, I am slightly suspicious that men are considered better, though there is no obvious anti-women behaviour. It just seems that men get promoted a bit more than women: the leading team is all men. Members of the board (5), CEO, COO, project managers (3).... maybe it is just bad luck?

    Creative, dynamic start up company

    Pros

Base4 is a start-up company with ambitious goals and a staff of incredibly talented people. It's an inspiring place to work and is small enough that there's loads of scope to get involved in new things. It suits scientists and software designers who want to push the boundaries of what's possible and get involved in really creative problem solving. Nothing run of the mill about the company or the team who work there. If you're keen to get into the business/enterprise side of science this is a great option because the small size of the company means you get to experience the business stuff as well as the science. It's a friendly, sociable place to work with great perks (e.g., private medical) and lovely offices.

    Cons

Might not suit those who like rigid step-by-step way of working - it's exciting and intellectually challenging which I guess can be intimidating for some. Small company means not so many promotion options, but that really doesn't matter because there's loads of scope to add to your CV while working there.

Biotech company with a stimulating attitude

    Pros

Base4innovation is a relatively small biotech company based in a beautiful and intellectually inspiring area of West Cambridge, near the Cavendish Laboratory and the Department of Veterinary Medicine. The company atmosphere is quite relaxed although focused to reach its goals and the heterogeneity of highly qualified backgrounds creates a constant flow of new and exciting ideas. In this company you'll have the opportunity to work with young and smart people in a friendly environment and if you show an out-of-the box thinking attitude you will get support and opportunities to grow and develop your interests further. The CEO inspiration from californian-style companies makes the working day fun as you will enjoy many recreational activities, i.e waffle breakfasts or lunch-time personal training sessions

    Cons

The flat hierarchy could be an impediment to step up the career ladder within the company however there is always a margin for career development if that's a personal interest. If your professional judgement is based exclusively on number of published papers and titles achieved I don't recommend you to go work for this company, or for any other open-minded modern start-up companies.

Genuine review - unlike some of those posted here.

    Pros

Good people from all disciplines, possible to learn a lot by mixing with people from different backgrounds.

    Cons

Micromanagement from senior staff, some of whom have no formal qualifications in science. The CSO left and has not been replaced, leaving scientific oversight in the hands of those less qualified. Very high staff turnover.

Read below before accepting a job offer

    Pros

You can enjoy personal trainer sessions, playing anytime table soccer, free food and drinks.

    Cons

The biggest problem is that you need to bare random moody, bully, disrespectful and unprofessional behavior of the CEO who, in addition, has no scientific qualifications/competences. You might end up to go, everyday, at work with a feeling of terror because there is great probability that the CEO can be mad at you for any reason. They promised to work in a transparent environment.. but the reality was different.. I discovered bunch of exaggerations and sometimes lies. The management hires nice and qualified people .. but a great percentage leaves the job after 6-12 months and this slows down the project you work on.

    Pros

Shiny on the outside. That's about it. I would not read too much into the veneer of things working smoothly.

    Cons

If you like working for a schoolyard bully that has no regard for his employees then go for it. If you want to do something complete irrelevant to what you were promised before getting the job and if you like to have an adjustment period of about 5 seconds, then again, go for it. If you like being proud that your are simply stumbling along with no clear vision from the management, then again, fell free to join. In your shoes I would probably try to work in a different building.

    Pros

It is a fairly small company with approx. 15 people. It has no strict regulations and you have relatively flexible working time.

    Cons

If you are not a DNA specialist or a chemist, do prepare that you need to explain everything from fragment to your manager as they know nothing but they oddly have the confidence that they can recruit people.
