I worked at Binding Site full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Central location, open to hiring graduates

    Cons

    - Role not as described - Lack of progression - Lack of development opportunities - Lack of trust: all the tasks that have some more weight and importance are distributed between managers, while their employees (with PhDs) are left with secretary-type jobs. In turn, there is no recognition or work satisfaction. - Very repetitive work - Lack of flexibility regarding working hours or working from home

Thank you for taking the time to provide this review and we are always willing to listen to feedback to see how we can improve. We recruited over 100 people last year in the UK and graduates and apprentices form a significant part of this. We would not want a situation where the role description and the expectations of the role are significantly at odds. We will take on board your observations and look into where we can make improvements in the areas you have identified. Your experience is not typical of most employees at TBS where in the last 2 years we have had 40 internal promotions and invested over 18,000 hours in people development. In terms of flexibility and working from home we have clear and established policies for both home working and flexible working and welcome applications for both. Group Head of HR

I worked at Binding Site full-time

    Pros

    - There are some really talented individuals who work here to learn from. - Office is lovely and new. - Good induction program from the L&D team. - Good apprenticeship opportunities

    Cons

    - Managers do not manage their staff - they would rather pay them out if they become a "problem" - Lack of autonomy unless you're a head of department - all decisions have to be run past the most senior manager in your area. - HR policies and procedures are convoluted and paper based. - Inequality in pay - senior managers have huge pay checks, technicians (some with PHDs) earn minimal with no pay scale to recognise experience. You could work here as a technician for several years and earn the same as someone straight out of uni.

    Binding Site Response

Thank you for the review and we agree that we are really privileged to have great people working with us and in state of the art premises with a company that does care about its people and the environment in which they work. We are proud of the work we do to take on and train apprentices and we have successfully trained apprentices in many different areas of the business and these have gone to have successful careers with us and elsewhere. What is important to us is not just recruiting and training great people but that these schemes provide opportunities for individuals to develop further in their working career and supports them with the skills and experience for a positive future. Thank you for specifically identifying the Induction and Learning and Development team. They are good at what they do and passionate about our company and we are glad that the induction reflects what we as a company want to offer to everyone and all the Board absolutely support this. All managers are expected to support their team in their work life and recognise that this may mean supporting them with personal circumstances too. We don’t know what the specifics of your situation are and unfortunately you don’t say which area of the company you worked in, if you would like to provide more information please contact a member of HR or one of the Directors. In terms of the staff turnover the UK national average in 2019 was around 20%, compared to ours at around 13%. We employ a significant number of new graduates and many in their first full time working role (around 50% of our employees are under 30). We recognise that as people develop their careers, they may not all stay as we may not be able to offer the opportunities or roles that the wish to progress to. We would like to retain everyone but recognise that isn’t realistic. The most mobile element of the UK work force is those in the 18-24 year-old demographic where around 23% expect to move roles within 12 months so we do significantly better than the national average. We work hard to ensure that we pay fair salaries for the knowledge skills and experience of the role. As a minimum we pay the National Living Wage (currently just over £20k for a full time role) for every role including our amazing cleaning team and everyone gets the opportunity to participate in the Company bonus which last year paid out £500. Every year we undertake a pay review and for the last 5 years we have awarded at least inflation as a minimum pay rise for everyone and at the technician level this was 5% last year. We encourage ideas from all departments and individuals whether that be about improving the business and operations or what charity or social activities we can support. We get great participation when these activities are undertaken and are always encouraging people to get involved. We are continually thinking about the future of the organisation and its people to ensure we continue to improve our company and what we offer our people and I am sorry that on this occasion you didn’t feel that this was the case. Thank you for taking to the time to read our response. If this hasn’t put you off and are interested in a role with us check out our Linked in account or website which has out latest roles. www.linkedin.com/company/the-binding-site-group-ltd/ www.bindingsite.com If you want to make a difference in your role and be part of a company that is trying to improve both itself and the life chances of its end customer, the patients, then you should come and work with The Binding Site. I worked at Binding Site full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Willing to hire fresh graduates

    Cons

Where to start? Job not as advertised (not at all as advertised, like anywhere near it) Menial and repetitive tasks No trust from supervisors. Supervisors seem to be in their role due to period of service, and not due to actual skill (probably down to lack of development the company offers) No chance for progression or career development, once you have been onboarded, personal and professional development from the company stops. Low pay compared to other jobs in the sector, they really play the 'we are the only biotech company in Birmingham' card. I would only recommend this company if you are confined to Birmingham and are really struggling. I have spoken in depth with many people from other departments and they are of the same opinion. The company has a ridiculously high turnover of staff, probably due to some of the reasons I have highlighted here.

I am sorry that the experience that you had you didn’t feel met with your expectations and this isn’t what we would desire for anyone who works in the company. As a senior team we all share a common aim to offer a productive and engaging work place that cares for its people and are united in our desire to continue to offer the best products and service to our customers and those that benefit from the products, namely patients. Our workforce profile is that around 50% of our employees are below 30 as we are a growing company and provide a lot of opportunities for young people including through Apprenticeships from Level 3 right up to degree level and supported MBAs. With a diverse workforce we would not expect everyone to stay and recognise that people will want to develop their careers in lots of different ways that we cannot necessarily always accommodate. We do however pride ourselves as our average length of service is around 6 years and churn is less than 13% so we must be getting some things right with most of the 700 employees that work here in the UK. Unfortunately, as you don’t provide any more detail on where in the Company you worked it’s difficult to provide more specific responses. You say you have spoken in depth to other people about this but it would have been more productive if you had spoken to us to allow us to try and resolve any concerns you may have been facing. We are always open to hearing what we are getting right and when we are not meeting expectations how we can improve through numerous channels including our Employee Forum, HR, Managers or Directors and that way we look to change things. In terms of the playing the only biotech in Birmingham card? We are probably the largest Biotech company in the Midlands and offer over 100 different roles across 20 departments. Last year we grew by over 50 new roles and support a lot of people both at the start of their career as well as to develop and progress and hope to continue to be able to do this for many more. This is something that we should be rightfully proud of. At present we are really excited to be collaborating with the University of Birmingham and University Hospital Birmingham to develop a new Covid-19 antibody test and this is creating opportunities for people across a range of departments to get involved in helping advance medical science for world benefit. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-06-covid-trigger-rare-kawasaki-like-syndrome.html The development and training opportunities we are offer are substantial and varied and there are numerous opportunities to move internally to progress your career. Last year there were over 18,000 hours of staff time spent on development and training and over 40 promotions . All Supervisors and Managers attend a structured development programme and we continue to invest in our people to help them be develop further as mangers and mentors. Great to see you recommend us if you are based in Birmingham, it’s a great City with so much going on. We have grown from around 400 to 700 employees over the last 5 years. As part of this expansion we take on around 50 graduates and apprentices every year and with new products due to be released this is growth is continuing. If you are reading this and are interested in a role with us check out our Linked in account or website which has out latest roles. www.linkedin.com/company/the-binding-site-group-ltd/ www.bindingsite.com Thanks for reading this review and it really isn’t as bad as they make out otherwise I wouldn’t stay to write the responses! I worked at Binding Site full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Free tea and coffee on breaks

    Cons

Where to start? Essentially the job that I was employed to do here never happened. The MSLs in the scientific communication team are mostly used as medical writers. I spent the majority of my time writing risk assessments and making power-point presentations for other people. There is little to no emphasis on interaction with KOLs, in my 10 months here I met 1 KOL, despite pushing to. Any tasks that have an importance are handled by the managers, such as advisory boards, so you gain almost zero true MSL experience. The policies here are the worst I've ever worked under, they are almost completely one sided. For example the travel policy expects you to travel and attend conferences etc in your own time with no time in lieu or overtime. They have been reviewing this policy for 3 years so I wouldn't expect this to change any time soon. Working here was also detrimental to my career progression, some pharma companies refused to interview me as I had this company on my CV. I had been warned personally about this company but I naively thought 'it won't be like that for me'. Sadly it was. I wish I had an honest review of the MSL Sci Comms role such as this one before I took the position. If you are looking for an MSL position with lots of KOL interactions, then don't apply here. Do apply if you enjoy medical writing, especially risk assessments.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts around the role and that the description of the role and your expectations did not align. We will take this on board and ensure we carefully review future roles to ensure that the job description adequately reflects the requirements of the role. As an IVD company, we pride ourselves on being driven by the science and our MSL roles may have some different responsibilities to MSL positions in pharmaceutical companies. As scientific experts, our MSLs are critical to the success of the company and their in-depth understanding of the products and associated disease states positions them as essential contributors to internal activities such as product performance evaluations. External interactions are also fundamental to the company’s success. We work closely with leading medical institutions around the world, an example being the recent collaboration with the University of Birmingham on the development of a COVID-19 antibody test. As an MSL you would be responsible for exploring new product applications, identifying opportunities for collaboration and building external KOL networks to expand new product applications is a key responsibility of the role and we are sorry to hear that your KOL interactions did not meet your expectations in the short time you were with us. We appreciate feedback from employees regarding our policies and this can be discussed with their manager, Director, HR or their employee forum representative. Our current policy allows Time off in Lieu for working and travelling at the weekend. and we are aware that our Time off in Lieu policy was clarified and resolved with you before you left.
