Pros

Great vision Love supporting the Tribes and their communities Opportunity to work on different projects and learn different skills

Cons

Way too much travel. I loved the travel that was made to meet and support Tribal communities. However, management often had us attend monthly conferences that at times were not necessary. This really affected my work life balance and ultimately was a big factor in me leaving the company.

Thank you for sharing your experience and for contributing to our work supporting Tribal communities. We’re glad to hear that you valued the purpose, the opportunity to work on diverse projects, and the chance to develop new skills during your time at CRIHB. We also appreciate your feedback regarding travel and work-life balance. Because our work often involves direct partnership with Tribal communities across the state, some roles do require travel to maintain those relationships and provide meaningful support. That said, we recognize the importance of balance and continuously evaluate travel expectations, scheduling, and workload to ensure they are sustainable for our staff. Your feedback is valuable and helps us continue improving how we support employees while advancing our purpose. - CRIHB Leadership

Pros

Good Benefits and Hybrid Schedule.

Cons

I joined California Rural Indian Health Board because I believed deeply in the mission and the importance of serving Native communities. Unfortunately, the reality of the position did not align with how the role was presented. The workload was overwhelming and poorly scoped, with constantly shifting priorities and little strategic direction. Expectations were high, but support, onboarding, and clear leadership were lacking. Communication across teams felt disorganized, and decisions were often reactive rather than thoughtful or planned. Despite the organization’s mission-driven exterior, the internal culture felt stressful and unsustainable. Burnout was common, boundaries were not respected, and there was an expectation to “figure it out” without proper tools, training, or resources. Feedback was limited, and there was little room for professional growth or constructive dialogue. Management did not consistently advocate for staff, and accountability felt uneven. The role required wearing many hats without adequate compensation or recognition, making it difficult to feel valued or successful long term. I truly believe in the importance of Native health advocacy, but this position made it challenging to do meaningful work without sacrificing personal well-being. I would not recommend this role to someone seeking a supportive, well-structured environment. Pros Important mission Passionate coworkers who care deeply about the communities served Cons Poor leadership and direction Chronic overwork and burnout Lack of support, training, and clarity Misalignment between values and internal practices

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. We appreciate your commitment to CRIHB’s purpose and your recognition of the importance of serving Native communities, as well as the passion of our employees. We also recognize that organizations evolve. Over the past several years, CRIHB has undergone significant leadership, structural, and operational changes to strengthen support, clarity, and sustainability for our workforce. These changes include more defined roles and expectations, improved onboarding and training, increased attention to workload and burnout, stronger cross-team communication, and clearer accountability and decision-making processes. While individual experiences may vary, we remain committed to continuous improvement, listening to employee feedback, and aligning our internal practices with the values that guide our purpose. We encourage employees to raise concerns through our internal channels, allowing them to be addressed constructively and in a timely manner. Our focus remains on building a supportive, well-structured environment where employees can do meaningful work without sacrificing their well-being. — CRIHB Leadership

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and for your many years of service to CRIHB. We truly value the dedication of employees who have contributed to our purpose over the long term. We also want to note that this review reflects an experience from quite some time ago. Since then, CRIHB has made significant strides as an organization. Our HR team has remained stable, and overall staff turnover has been significantly reduced. We’ve also increased overall staffing levels and implemented several initiatives, including employee stay surveys, a compensation study and position updates, and stronger communication and leadership practices to better support our workforce. Given your long tenure, we genuinely hope you’ll keep an eye on CRIHB in the future. We’d be glad for you to see the progress we’ve made and consider us again as a potential employer down the road. —CRIHB Leadership
