Pros

If you have a heart for public service, this can be very rewarding. This job as listed as a 9-5 M-F, and you get to meet many wonderful people in the community.

Cons

Long hours, it's definitely not just M-F 9-5; you work nights, weekends and even some holidays. It really depends on your Chief of Staff an Assemblymember. No incentive to be efficient; low pay for hard work. Stressful.

Pros

Incredible benefits (health, vision, dental, transit, etc.) and pension plan, if you intend to stick around long enough to get vested.

Cons

Everything else depends on your member. If your member doesn’t care about their staff (especially their district staff) then your pay will start bad and stay bad, with very little chance of advancement. Even good bosses are seriously hamstrung by Assembly HR and their archaic idea of what a “living wage” is in coastal cities.

Pros

Lots of room for growth and constantly learning new subject matter (from legislation, to community outreach, to writing/research and marketing). Great opportunity to learn the ins and outs of State Government, the Legislative Process, and Electoral Campaigning.

Cons

Your employment is at-will, which means you can be fired without cause...which means sometimes you can be at the whim of abusive bosses. Tough work/life balance. If you work for a Legislator, your job is dependent on their winning re-election. Human Resources buries reports on misconduct, sexual harassment, assault, and discrimination, so you will not find much support if you have to report an abusive boss.
