Disorganised mess

Pros

Intelligent staff, good culture, friendly day to day, some kind management who take time to help

Cons

No time to do the work we’re asked to do, lots of cut corners, understaffing means junior employees are worked to death while senior management over promises to clients, hiring many freelancers with patchy hours instead of full time staff that we really need, weird diversity issues that contradict our advice to clients in the library, no feeling of direction for junior employees, favouritism from the CEO means no recognition for the work we do, and people constantly quitting every month

I'm really sorry to hear this. The work can be challenging and it's not always easy. We're continually striving to get to the best answers we can. And it means bringing in the right team with the right expertise and experience. That includes freelancers, many of who have worked with us for many years, as and when they're needed. We take diversity seriously and it's something we pride ourselves on. Even though our team's diversity is almost twice the industry average, there is still massive room for improvement and we're continually looking to be better. Nick, the MD, has always had an open-door policy and is supportive of people across the business regardless of seniority. Our most talented junior employees rise very quickly, and the pathways are clear. There is no favouritism, we promote only on merit. Unfortunately in the last three months, three people did leave for new opportunities (including an MSc scholarship) but we're fortunate overall turnover is low.If you need any support at all please reach out to one of us. As Head of People, you can always talk confidentially to me or you can meet with Ainsley in his weekly HR drop-in sessions.

Great Culture and Interesting Work

Pros

The company is young and vibrant, with great people and a very friendly work atmosphere. They are very clear as to the routes you can take within the company, and personal employee development is closely monitored. I started as an intern and was hired as Junior Behavioural Analyst, and enjoyed the work and the environment in which it took place. They were very accommodating with personal needs and my supervisor was attentive and mindful of my wellbeing and personal development. Got to work on interesting projects with big clients, and write a lot of interesting pieces for the library. The library content management was exceptional, open minded and truly nurturing and encouraging of input and original ideas.

Cons

As is customary in the industry, starting pay isn't great. For me, the pay rises one would hope for when moving weren't significant enough to motivate.

Pros

The people Canvas8 is by far the most enjoyable place I've ever worked. You're surrounded by smart, kind, interesting, and supportive people, and a management team that genuinely invest time and effort into your happiness and career development.  Especially during lockdown, when emotions have been high, the CEO and management in general have been incredibly supportive and transparent, keeping everyone regularly updated on furlough policies, office opening timelines, and business prospects as a whole, reassuring employees and putting our wellbeing first. I've heard a few horror stories about other companies forcing staff to take pay cuts and generally letting employee wellbeing slip during lockdown. Thankfully, this has not been the case at Canvas8. We have weekly mindfulness sessions to keep us sane while WFH, and check-ins with managers to make sure we're doing ok, both personally and professionally.  The work It's pretty amazing to work at a place where you literally learn something new every day. If you're interested in psychology, anthropology, or even just people watching and understanding why people do what they do, Canvas8 is a great place to work. I constantly feel intellectually stimulated and challenged, my brain literally working at full capacity, and it's pretty much impossible to be bored. The culture Monday morning breakfasts, an office dog named Oscar, regular pizza presentations, summer Friday hours, Friday evening drinks... It's really nice to work somewhere that recognises happy people make happy workers. Canvas8 has made a real effort to create a warm and welcoming culture where everyone feels comfortable and empowered. They're also seriously invested in embedding D&I into the DNA of the company, as opposed to just a box-ticking exercise, something that's important to a lot of the staff. I'm excited to watch this part of Canvas8 progress and develop as they put more money and oomph into it.

Cons

It's definitely fast paced, and you have to manage your time wisely in order to keep on top of the workload. In a way, this atmosphere has been a pro for me personally, forcing me to take more control over my schedule and making me a much more productive person. Sometimes though, there's an unrealistic expectation of how long a task will take, which means I can end up working a couple hours overtime. Also, I came into the job without any experience in behavioural insights, so getting to grips with the industry felt like a pretty big learning curve. It would be great if there was more tailored support from the beginning / ongoing training for newbies in the field (I believe this is something that is currently being worked on, so that's great).
