Pros

Chew attracts talent looking for a place to make an impact.

Cons

Due to the unfortunate fact there is no option to rate this place as an abysmal black hole of soul sucking despair, I am forced to cough up a single star. I know that sounds harsh, but it’s really important you understand this. I’m writing this for you. If you’re anything like me, you’re reading these Glassdoor reviews and doubting the legitimacy of all of them, thinking, “Oh, I’m different than them…I’m tougher. I’m a hard worker. I’m…‘fill in the blank.’” I trust that you are; I really do. But unfortunately, it’s completely irrelevant. During the interview process, Chew presents the opportunity for one to live their dream and truly make a difference in the industry. Everything from opportunity for growth, the benefits package, the facility, the food innovation, and the oh so charming CEO give the illusion that possibilities are limitless. I, like many others, ecstatically dove head first into this company not realizing that I was, in fact, biting into a feces filled m&m no peanut could ever diguise. Do not let the candy-coated shell lure you into biting at the "opportunity" you are presented unless of course you are looking for the following: 1. Conflicting micromanagement from a minimum of three colleagues who aren’t your bosses, but act like it. There is no shortage of Office Space material here. 2. You enjoy emotional suffering so much that the cognitive dissonance the owner inflicts really satisfies those hankerings you may have on a weekend when you just need to be told you're a worthless pile despite doing everything you are told to be a good little pet. 3. You thrive in an environment where everyone is in danger and you enjoy plotting your survival and exit strategy. "May the odds be forever in your favor." 4. You’re a gambling addict inspired by a turnover rate that feeds your greed to bet big to win big. Chew was the worst experience I’ve had in any professional capacity. If I could jump through the screen and throw a tarp over you to save you from accepting a position with this company, I would. It would be a more productive effort to move to North Korea to establish democracy and capitalism than to waste an ounce of energy or creative talent on this company. Your passion, your drive, your desire to make a difference in the industry is totally worth struggling for; Chew is not the environment to support you in achieving that.

Not a real business- just a toy for a deeply troubled CEO

Pros

The idea and mission of the company are compelling. But completely drowned out by the day-to-day misery and paranoia of this place.

Cons

The company is founded, funded, and run by a CEO with deep emotional and personal issues that manifest themselves in every single day at Chew. He isn't a leader running a business- he's a disturbed individual who takes out his need to stroke his own ego and transfer his emotional baggage onto his employees at all levels, as well as on the business through self-destructive decisions. And because he has no accountability to anyone else, his horrible behavior goes completely unchecked. To be more specific: -He goes to great lengths to control employees. I confirmed he eavesdropped on at least one meeting of senior leaders discussing cultural problems and massive employee turnover through a Nest cam, which is illegal in the state of Massachusetts. He frequently comes up with arbitrary and strict new rules on how to look, act, and think. -He chronically exaggerates, even to the point of flat out lying at times, to both staff and clients. -He values loyalty over all else. He tries to create division between employees by playing obvious favorites with those that tell him whatever he wants to hear. -He's unable to deal with any form of criticism, and goes great lengths to place the blame on others (often done publicly).

Dysfunctional and Bordering on Professionally Abusive

Pros

You will work with the most amazing, smart, talented and fun people. The CEO/Founder truly is a great visionary, and to his credit, he is inspiring and has the ability to sell almost anyone on his dream. There is also an awesome lady chef that makes delicious lunches for the team.

Cons

Where to start? The CEO/Founder has no idea how to run a business or moreover, how to manage people. He's good at selling people on his vision and hooks people on false promises that never actually happen. The company is run like a military, or an upscale kitchen in a 5-star restaurant - workers are expected to be obedient and fall in line. Unless you are one of the favorites, DO NOT challenge the CEO or you will not have a job for much longer. He says that he wants people to call BS on him when he doesn't practice what he preaches, but in reality, that's all talk. He is one of the most difficult, arrogant and unappreciative people I've worked with in my professional career. The (Australian) founder/CEO refuses to provide any constructive feedback, and often jokes about Americans needing to be coddled and praised. Any basic management training will tell you that this is absolutely NOT the way to motivate people and retain talent. The whole thing is smoke and mirrors...the CEO is so scared of being "found out" that he micromanages everyone and then tells you you are not capable of "excellence".
