Pros

Opportunity to work with various stakeholders including other NGOs and various Ministries. Develop a good understanding of working in public health in lower resource settings.

Cons

Some times slow to complete work due to complex relationships with partners.

Exciting, fast-moving NGO

Pros

People are passionate and smart, each individual is given a lot of freedom to do their own job and build new opportunities, and low-bureaucracy environment makes the job fun and fast-paced.

Cons

Country offices and global teams vary widely in their culture - some are really impact and evidence driven and push incredibly hard to hire the absolute best and deliver the most impact in a humble and frugal way, others may succumb more to the typical NGO approach of flying in and out of countries providing "technical assistance" without making much meaningful change. Pick your team carefully, and find a good fit.

Pros

A good salary for those based in South Africa. Exposure across public health sector; health departments, other non-profit organisations and Global Funders and Global Organisations. A good mix of technical programmes to learn about, including health financing.

Cons

Poor & non-existent Talent Management. No desire or political will to develop staff beyond their current role and capacity. Archaic HR systems. Poorly trained Managers, sometimes very clueless. Favouritism played a huge role in promotions around 2019 to 2021. An organisation that is stuck in its former glory and lacking in new ideas in growing it's scope of work and funding pool. There is room for new strategies, but those can only work if the leaders take an active interest in listening to their staff, particularly Analysts & Associates.
