Pros

- Diverse projects - Nice people on the engineering/design side. These are mostly ex-HP folks who are generally well mannered and intelligent. - Work/life balance can be reasonable. Put in your nine hours (not eight), do what you can, and ignore the fact that you'd have to work twice that much to actually hit the project schedule. BTW, if you do work more and deliver more you won't be rewarded, but I guess that's a con so I'm getting ahead of myself. - On the engineering side you don't have to deal with the rampant nepotism and cronyism. You can't fake the engineering degree, so the "friends and family program" is mostly implemented in manufacturing and support functions. - Engineering management is generally good with a few glaring exceptions.

Cons

- Crazy project schedules. It's all about getting the clients hooked and locking them in. If you actually try to deliver to the promised schedule you will probably be working nights and weekends, and you will not be rewarded for the effort. - No training, investment, or growth of any kind. - Not many tools. - Terrible benefits. - Pay can be OK if you come in from a position of strength - i.e. you have a job. You will never get a meaningful raise, so whatever you start at is what you're going to get in perpetuity. - No real bonus. No stock or other compensation. - Management outside of engineering is very weak.

Pros

Diverse technical challenges for all disciplines driven by dire need for solutions for desperate clients who can't do it on their own. Owners are great people and have good intentions for everyone. Technical staff is for the most part ex HP'ers which makes for good culture environment. HR, IT, and all supporting staff are outstanding.

Cons

Middle management (especially directors) tend to base their decisions on who works on what project based on favoritism. If you are lucky, you are in the favored crowd. If you are not, might as well find yourself another place to work. You will be miserable. Scope and schedule on incoming projects are always way off in favor of hooking clients in for business. Everyone including the client suffer. Management is dishonest with clients and and sometimes staff. Too much rank and order. Not everyone is respected equally regardless of title.

Pros

Competent people to work with. Variety of projects from all industry. Opportunity for learning a lot if time allows. Flexible work environment. Easy going owners.

Cons

Stressful and demanding place to work. The client has all the say. You will be the last person everything false on whether it's an ill scoped project with unrealistic schedule or something went wrong in meeting the requirement the client had (which is always changing). Too much management and layers upon layers of it. Incompetent managers that move up to position based on how well they please upper management. Some backstabbing culture is there. You always have to watch your back.
