Pros

Not a whole lot but PTO is "unlimited", until it isn't. The people you work with are great and hard working, totally undervalued and taken advantage of. Some recent positive changes regarding bonuses, as before there were none so the bar is low.

Cons

Health insurance is expensive, family coverage is out of reach for most. Pay is poor for Chicago. Internal reviews are a waste of time. Follow through is poor. Raises are reactive, meaning you have to threaten quit to get one. You'll be doing the job of two and expected to do the job of three. Over promise and under deliver with clients ( The lies you will tell...). Zero upward momentum, only vertical if you're lucky. The only public response to the events of 2020-2021 (Pandemic, BLM, Protests, Police Shootings, Social Justice) was a post / meeting about Kobe passing. No serious sexual harassment (Oh the comments.) or inclusion training. Lots of money coming in but clearly not going to the businesses dated infrastructure. (Old equipment, unorganized) Using apps to track employees time to the second and screenshots of their machines. If you love IT you will get burned out, you will not cut your teeth here and you will not learn healthy work / life habits. You'll only come up for air every once and a while and realize you haven't been present for anything besides work. If you don't believe me please Google working at an MSP. You deserve to work somewhere better.

Pros

You will make some friends at this organization that go beyond company walls. Exposure to different projects allow you to build soft skills, gain technical knowledge, and contribute to a bigger picture. Convenient Downtown Chicago location close to public transportation. Happy hour every Friday consisting of good craft beer and a variety of liquor. Regardless of the team you’re working on, one can easily mingle with other employees in different departments. Most employees have ergonomic work stations which provide a sitting or standing option during working hours.

Cons

There are many negative qualities about the organization that make you wonder how they exist or keep, not only their employees, but the customers as well. The organization has various internal issues. These issues have been dissected so many ways without any proper and permanent resolutions by management. The efforts, diligence, and time that employees invest is not reciprocated by the company. Employee efforts are constantly overlooked by management. The company can care less about employees unless an employee is favored. The company provides medical/dental/vision insurances, and a retirement investment option because “it is the thing to do”. At the end of the day, it feels that certain benefits are provided as a necessity rather than organically investing in the well-being of employees. In the past, the organization was transparent in how much it contributed to your insurance costs. Now, you are simply informed that the company contributes. The insurance costs have increased each year, especially for 2020, that is ultimately reflected in your take home pay being significantly less. One should look into opting into their spouse’s insurance or leaving the organization for one that covers more of your costs and invests IN YOU. The morale has been and is extremely low throughout the Chicago office. You will never see anyone excited about their work. You’re under constant deadlines and pressure and all you care about is for 5pm to come quickly and for the weekend to last forever. How would you feel if your CEO stated he encourages and believes in doing “more with less”? You constantly witness employees completing the work of two or three individuals with no incentive nor appreciation by management. It is expected of you to work without any proper recognition unless you are favored. On regular occasions, the employees bear witness to some sort of favoritism. If you do the work of two or three individuals for a long duration (a year or two), you will gain some respect from management and will be labeled as “loyal”. Anything less will be regarded as the employee having a subpar work ethic. There was more turnover in the last three years than promotions (about 5 to 1) at the Chicago offices. There are very few Chicago employees that have been around longer than 5-6 years. Since the organization has been around for almost 20 years, this makes you question where everyone is. It is hinted that working more than 40 hours a week makes you stand out. That implies that management does not respect employee work life-balance. When you have personal obligations frequently and need to alter your work arrangements, you’re under scrutiny by the people above on what is happening; whether you’re interviewing or abusing the situation. This organization only provides 6 paid holidays. The unlimited PTO is a means to not pay out former employees their vacation time when separating from the company. The unlimited PTO has the fine print of being enforced properly depending on who you are at the company, whether you are liked, and who your manager is. There is no set remote work program but some employees with families abuse this regularly at the manager’s discretion. The Chicago office was expanded recently, so it would be a waste to see it empty is how it is perceived. No matter who you converse with at the organization, each individual obtains different explanations about the company policies, principles, and vision. At times, it feels like the managers do not even know the company policies. Confusion is spread across the board. You will never find anyone on the same page because the organization lacks a proper HR department. All the insurance, retirement information, and company policies are carried out by management because there is no Human Resource Administrator. The company will not hire a Human Resources Administrator. The company does not invest in the proper resources or tools that you need to complete your work. The computers in the office frequently break, are on the older side, and are recycled by former employees. For a technical firm, the company does not invest in adequate technological tools and resources for employees to perform their day-to-day responsibilities. Even the conference rooms struggle to project laptops to the TV’s wirelessly. Instead, the company focuses more on innovations to offer to the market, such as a ticketing system. The apple computers freeze, update randomly, or simply stop functioning in the middle of projects and tasks which is frustrating and discouraging. It also seems like the internal tech team does not know how to fix the iMac’s in the office as the same concerns repeat for everyone with an iMac. For individual birthdays, pastries would be provided by the company. Then, pastries were provided on a monthly basis for all birthdays of the month. Now, there are no pastries at all. In the past, fruit was delivered to the office every two weeks for about three months then stopped without notice. The modern kitchen does not even have enough paper towels sometimes and teammates end up bringing towels from the restrooms from down the hall. Quite embarrassing to say the least. Would it hurt to throw a celebratory pizza party with all the stellar work the employees try to provide to clients for the business? Sadly, it feels like that may be too much to ask for. The company should take advice from Richard Branson who states, “Take care of your employees and they will take care of your business. It is as simple as that”. It is dispiriting to hear about career paths constantly when you never see anyone transition to new roles. Career paths are discussed but mentoring one to get promoted almost never happens. Some get promoted when others leave the company. Instead, employees’ workloads are increased by taking on the work of other employees who have departed. Management has asked employees to leave Glassdoor reviews, many of which are fabricated to demonstrate a top-notch organization. If the organization was stellar in the eyes of the employee, employees would write positive reviews voluntarily rather than being suggested to do so. Management lacks providing proper performance reviews and raises. Salaries are not of market value after discussing with fellow team members. This is not surprising since necessities are not provided within the office. It is frustrating to see customers and projects leave your desk because clients do not believe in our services to grow their businesses. Lately, it feels like the company is spiraling. When a position vacates by someone leaving the company, that role is not backfilled. Other employees watch live sports, Netflix shows, etc. on their monitors, literally sleep on the job, and some employees even apply for external jobs in clear view. It is extremely difficult to comprehend how management can sell us on the company being profitable and in good standing when accounts and employees are dropping throughout the year. Overall, you walk away feeling cheated, perplexed, and sick to your stomach. Robin Hood took from the rich and gave to the poor. Metaphorically, it feels like the organization grows their pockets deep while leaving the employees with nothing and nothing invested in YOU; the blood, sweat, and tears of the organization. Definitely think twice when contemplating applying to work here. There is nothing available here that you can’t get elsewhere ten times better. Internal issues are presented to the employees as stemming from the bottom. In reality, the organization’s lack of stability is caused by issues from the management level. If you end up taking a position here, use this review as a guideline. Pay attention to red flags such as employee departures, negative reviews of the company, the curb appeal of perks such as a game room with happy hour Fridays and food trucks on the street as a selling point during the interview, and lack of mentorships to build your skillset into other roles. If you want that college atmosphere, then apply here. Until then, fake it until you make it to a respectable organization that has your best interests versus only focusing on their own pockets and survival. Expect a standard reply to this review from management.

Pros

1. Talented Employees: honestly, not sure how EMPIST attracts such talented folks to work there. During my tenure, I met some incredibly resourceful, creative professionals in all departments there. The problem is, management and executives do absolutely nothing to get talented people to stay, and company turnover suffers for it.

Cons

1. Laughable Pay: salaries across all departments are not even close to market-competitive rates, despite the highest expectations from executives. There is no structure for advancement or mobility within the company, and there are no raises. For more than two years execs promised a new bonus structure and raises and failed to deliver. 2. Toxic atmosphere: c-suite executives pride themselves on creating a cult-like bro culture built around empty promises. Daily company-wide morning standup calls are required for all employees, and the CEO will call out employees who don't have their cameras on and aren't cheering when he says to cheer. The call is outside business hours and does not count towards overtime. If you aren't blindly hanging on to every word the CEO says, he will not like you. He will be disrespectful and rude to you in every meeting you are in together. Executives promote a toxic atmosphere and are constantly making completely inappropriate jokes in front of employees, with no consequences (see lack of HR section below). 3. Unskilled Middle Management: there is a severe lack of organization within middle management. Managers cower before the c-level execs and will not back up the employees on their teams. On multiple separate occasions, my manager threw hardworking employees under the bus for his own mistakes, failing to take accountability, and getting them fired in the process. 4. High Employee Turnover: those employees who do not buy into the toxic culture present within the company do not last long. The pay is not anywhere close to competitive enough for anyone to put up with the company, so they take their talents elsewhere. Management spends little time or effort trying to preserve the work of departing employees, and do not rehire to fill empty positions, opting instead to shrink teams while increasing workload expectations. 5. No Human Resources Department: executives and upper level managers are constantly making inappropriate jokes and innuendos to each other, even pointedly making remarks about their subordinate employees in their presence and the presence of others. Human Resources duties are forced upon one back office employee who is untrained and unwilling to perform them effectively for the entire company, instead of hiring a trained HR professional. Employees have nowhere to turn when they are being targeted by jokes or mistreatment from their managers. 6. No Employee Appreciation: despite unrealistic expectations and constantly increasing workloads, upper management shows no interest in recognizing the efforts of their employees. A quarterly pizza lunch does not remedy incompetent pay and antagonistic management practices.

Hello and thank you for the review. We take every review seriously, especially if it is a negative one. As a growing company we don't always get it right, and we are truly sorry you have felt this way. Since you took the time to list multiple concerns, I believe we owe it to you, those who work at EMPIST and those looking to work here to provide an accurate representation of how we operate our business. - As a company listed currently number 74 in the world out of 130,000 MSP companies, and also making the INC 5000 most successful companies 8 times in the past 10 years, we could not have accomplished that feat without the support and testimony by our employees and clients. In other words, our work performance and also how we carry ourselves all the time with teammates and clients alike needs to be at certain levels to accomplish such achievements. - Every organization has been phased with Employee Turnover issues since the start of the pandemic. EMPIST is no exception to the rule. However, since Dec 2021 we have grown our team by 23%, in a time where most companies shrink in size and announce massive layoffs. We are committed to invest in top talent. Furthermore, we could not have afford to bring the top talent that event you have praised us for having without paying competitive salaries and compensation as driven by the market. Lastly on compensation, everyone in the company the last 2 years has received an annual bonus, based on performance and contribution. On top of that, our Sales teams are all in performance-based bonuses and we have implemented several bonus structures for non-revenue producing employees with more teams to come. - Our executive team is small, as we are also a smaller size company. Our executives drive this growth of 40% the last 2 years with passion, commitment and determination on behalf of all employees and trusted clients. Although our primary product is providing the best Technology Solutions for our clients, we are also a Sales Organization. It is through those sales that your pay, and every employee's pay is being compensated, and how we are able to keep investing in our growth, technology and more great talent. We have invested a good amount in training, resources and SaaS systems and Sales platforms to provide our employees with the best knowledge to deliver our promise to our clients. - We truly feel that without accomplishing all these feats, which are only part of the great things we are doing, we would never be where we are today. We also understand that not everyone is a good fit for our organization, and we are able to accept that. We truly believe you will find a company that fits your needs and believes, and that you will be happy with your career and life and be part of many successful things. Thank you again for your review, and wishing you the best!!!
