Pros

- Strong hiring; the teachers and administrators I worked with were dedicated professionals - Administration is primarily people of color, and in particular women of color; people who lead the schools share student identities and are mindful of equity issues

Cons

- Weak programming; very few thriving clubs or sports for students, leading to an unbalanced high school experience - Under-resourced; about a third of staff members were laid off in one day in the spring of 2020 - the school has not rehired to capacity since - Low accountability for school culture; lack of resources make it difficult to address issues in school culture swiftly and fully - bullying proliferated on campus over the past year - Low expectations in student academics; focus on students having high grades over proof of learning - Non-responsive to teacher concerns; consistently gather information from teachers in feedback surveys with no response to stated concerns - Very little presence from CMO leaders; rarely present in schools, even more rarely present in classrooms - in four years with the organization, my instruction was observed twice by CMO leadership - Little to no instructional coaching on some campuses; when schools are not hired to capacity, teachers do not receive consistent coaching, with some teachers receiving no coaching - Very high teacher turnover; after four years at my campus, of all the teachers I worked with at the start, only four remain

Pros

USC Hybrid High School offers inner city youths and under served students the opportunity to grow within a high quality education system. The teachers are all friendly and sincerely wish for the success of all of their students. The front office staff is cordial and very helpful. The time off aspect is a major upside, as well as the time spent bonding with staff members after hours.

Cons

Some of the downsides for this school site would be the hours worked after the school day has ended (which ends at 4pm at this school), and that the school is primarily based in online learning, and utilizes technology for the vast majority of the classroom time (it's really both a pro and a con).

Pros

Dedicated teachers, some of whom are incredibly innovative. Beautiful facilities.

Cons

The headline was inspired by a direct quote from a student. I wish Ednovate put as much effort into developing their teachers, staff, and schools as they do the branding. Ednovate has made mistakes TWICE on my payroll and there are few opportunities for salary increases. The stipends that are provided are heavily taxed and always more work than it is worth. Teachers and students are constantly incentivized to write positive reviews on various platforms in exchange for raffles or prizes. I have been observed once in my four years at the school and have never been given critical feedback to grow. Thankfully I had teaching experience elsewhere, otherwise this is not a network to become a better educator. Some veteran educators/staff at the network run the risk of becoming too comfortable and never being held accountable. Many promotions are from within the network and people are hesitant to hold their friends accountable. This is often frustrating for those of us with fewer years at the network than others.
