Hard work but the reward is good - Client Acquisition Black Sheep Utilities Employee Review

Pros

It's a really nice environment to work in, the team are all great people and there's a strong bond between everyone. There's a competitive nature to everyone and lots of incentives with prizes to be won which can be fun and motivational. The office space is great, free food/drinks and a games area for lunch breaks etc. We've had some fun nights/lunches out and often get food delivered into the office - which is always appreciated! If you stick to the script and make regular bookings (sales) then the commission is amazing and makes up for the low basic pay.

Cons

The basic pay is low, but you can make up for this in commission. The managers are really strict on the use of the script and you MUST stick to it or face their wrath. The feedback can be quite brutal, but I get it because everyone has targets to meet and if they're not being met then the pressure is on - it is sales after all!

Pros

Booze, occasional praise, early finish on a Friday

Cons

The office runs off of a hierarchy of cliques. There are certain employees that the CEO will move heaven and earth for (the top two sales agents at the time), but the rest he will just watch on CCTV and call in for hour long meetings weekly where he will just scream at you and tell you how bad at your job you are. It's not uncommon to see staff crying, people will quit on a daily basis, managers will change procedures and protocols every hour without telling staff and then have a row with you over it saying that you 'should have known better' as though you were a mind reader. You form trauma bonds with your colleagues over free ham sandwiches and meeting them in the bathroom where you will go to cry - no one who values their mental health stays at Black Sheep for more than a few months. Any concerns or worries you have are entirely dismissed, team leaders and managers have little to no say in what they actually tell you due to the big brother experience of the cameras in the office. Completely understand needing/wanting to occasionally check in on your company but the constant watching of the cameras at BSU by the CEO give the office a big brother feel. Some staff are genuinely lovely, but most are out to stab you in the back at any opportunity with no consequence, in fact its rewarded due to the toxicity of this workplace. Once I left BSU it felt like a huge weight was taken off of my shoulders, I wouldn't even send my worst enemy to work here as it completely destroys anyone who walks through the door.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your experience at Black Sheep Utilities did not reflect the positive environment we strive to create. We recognise that our business is fast-paced, performance-driven and continuously evolving, which can be challenging at times. However, we never want any employee to feel unsupported, undervalued or uncomfortable in the workplace, and we take feedback like this seriously. Communication and consistency across teams are areas we continuously work on as we grow, and we appreciate all constructive feedback that helps us improve further. We also fully agree that recognising and rewarding employees should be meaningful and inclusive. Whilst social events and alcoholic prizes may form part of team incentives, we tailor rewards to individuals and teams and offer a wide range of alternatives including gift sets, gadgets, chocolates and other non-alcohol-based rewards. We are proud to have many long-standing team members who have built successful careers with us, but we also appreciate that not every environment is the right fit for every individual. Over the past few years, we have continued to invest in leadership development, management training, employee wellbeing and internal communication processes to ensure we continue improving as a business. Whilst we do not recognise some aspects of this review as representative of the wider culture at Black Sheep Utilities, we fully accept that this was your personal experience and we appreciate you sharing your perspective. We wish you all the best in your future career.
