Pros

Some talented and dedicated engineers and specialists on the front lines. Remote work flexibility. Robots are interesting (but being phased out.)

Cons

Unclear Product Vision and Quality Issues: The product roadmap was constantly shifting, making it difficult for teams to build toward a coherent, long-term goal. The core monitoring and robotics products were plagued by significant reliability issues and bugs, which meant engineering time was spent putting out fires rather than on innovative or stable development. This created a lot of internal frustration and negatively impacted customer satisfaction. Contradictory Leadership: This was the most challenging aspect. Leadership in the engineering department would set contradictory expectations. For example, stating a philosophy of "not believing in due dates" while also demanding alignment on hard deadlines for customer projects. This created a "no-win" situation for employees, where it was impossible to succeed because the rules were always changing. Poor Project Planning: There was a systemic issue of poor planning from management, which often led to last-minute, avoidable emergencies. The expectation was that engineers would sacrifice their personal time (nights, weekends) to fix these leadership-driven crises. Subjective and Unprofessional Feedback: When feedback was given, it was often vague, subjective, and focused on "tone" rather than on objective performance or business outcomes. Attempts to get specific, actionable criticism were often ignored or dismissed. This made it very difficult to grow or even understand what "success" looked like. Politics Over Performance: There was a clear culture of "protecting" certain employees, which made collaboration difficult. Simple, professional questions about project timelines could be perceived as "forceful" or "managerial," leading to political blowback. This forced employees to spend more time managing politics than managing their projects.
