Pros

You investigate civil rights violations and sometimes there’s even a legitimate claim.

Cons

The department is managed like crap. Only the State can get away with such poor management and employment law violations. They violate the same laws they investigate! Yeah. The executive staff is useless and they ignore the fact that they violate employment laws and that many staff are completely stressed. In fact, it is so bad that many staff are on stress leave. The department has been sued several times and they settle to try and hide their violations. Look up the cases, they are a good read. Management abuses the staff, over works them, and sets unrealistic demands. Rather than address the obvious employee retention issues, executive/management ignore the issues and increase staff workload to compensate for low employee retention. Anyone with a self-esteem and half a brain leaves the department and only people who tolerate abuse and hypocrisy stay. If you point out any obvious issues or critique management/executives, your career with the department is over. You will be singled out, you will never promote, and you will be picked on relentlessly.

Pros

State benefits. Decent healthcare. Coworkers are awesome.

Cons

This is a very toxic work environment. The work is stressful. The deadlines are impossible. Executive leadership has no idea how to lead people. It’s sad because this is the largest civil rights dept in the nation but cannot do anything to help Californians against civil rights violations because it is run so inefficiently and in dictator mode. Many complainants who are harmed do not get a proper resolution. Might as well get rid of this dept and save taxpayer money because it is a huge waste. More like a complaint factory designed to close cases rather than legitimately evaluate and resolve harms. What a joke.
