Pros

You investigate civil rights violations and sometimes there’s even a legitimate claim.

Cons

The department is managed like crap. Only the State can get away with such poor management and employment law violations. They violate the same laws they investigate! Yeah. The executive staff is useless and they ignore the fact that they violate employment laws and that many staff are completely stressed. In fact, it is so bad that many staff are on stress leave. The department has been sued several times and they settle to try and hide their violations. Look up the cases, they are a good read. Management abuses the staff, over works them, and sets unrealistic demands. Rather than address the obvious employee retention issues, executive/management ignore the issues and increase staff workload to compensate for low employee retention. Anyone with a self-esteem and half a brain leaves the department and only people who tolerate abuse and hypocrisy stay. If you point out any obvious issues or critique management/executives, your career with the department is over. You will be singled out, you will never promote, and you will be picked on relentlessly.

Pros

Helping people with civil rights issues.

Cons

Some of the executive team is violating the very law that DFEH is supposed to be enforcing. Favoritism in hiring and promoting rather than who is the most qualified. If the new Chief Deputy Director does not like you, then you are screwed. So much dishonesty and unethical behavior. So glad to be leaving this place. They treat their employees like crap. There are too many cases for the number of employees and it is poorly managed. Not worth the stress. Run for your lives (like a previous reviewer wrote) is right.

Pros

Awesome coworkers and SSMI's. Being able to help people.

Cons

The Chief Deputy Director, Mary Wheat, is ruining this agency. This is a really stressful job. Complainants often scream and yell at investigators, some even threaten to kill you or harm you or your family. The case load is really unreasonable and the demands are just crazy. Many consultants go out on stress leave. Mary Wheat's policies are dictatorial. She has no legal or civil rights background and it shows. She threatens to give write ups to people who have taken stress leave. It is a very retaliatory environment. Mary Wheat tries to demand processes that are just not humanly possibly. It is truly miserable and she does not listen. It's a shame because employees are very stressed and unhappy, but also because the public is not being properly serviced. This job is not worth it. Governor Newsom, you need to replace her and get someone who truly understands and appreciates civil rights.
