Pros
Some District Managers are okay, but the ones that are don't last long. If you are the type of person that likes to do all the work yourself, this is the job for you. 65+ hours a week means you don't have to worry about what to do with that annoying personal time. 20 hours of vacation after 6 months that will allow you a whole day off. If you manage to get promoted to district manager you get to attend lavish multi million dollar conventions while your store managers get their payroll cut.
Cons
65+ hours a week. Guaranteed. They will tell you 48, but even in their own scheduling it will show a difference between estimated workload and allowed hours of over 60, these are the hours the manger must work, in addition to maintaining all office functions. Low pay for the position, maximum starting pay in most stores was reduces this year to 36000. This works out to under $10 an hour for store managers. Average staffing is 6 people in a store including supervisors so as store manager you can count on covering all call ins. You are given about 120 hours to run a store, these are almost all cashier hours. All seasonal sets, stocking, planograms, and extra tasks mostly go to the store manager. You will be on call all day every day and if your store calls and you cannot come in or do not answer, expect a write up from your district manager. The company will tell you up front that they believe their employees are all stealing from them and the main shrink focus is on internal theft. You will feel big brother. I have been a store manager for 11 months, and out of 26 stores in my area, there is only 1 store manager that has been here longer than me. So don't even consider job security. I read these reviews before I took this position and decided that I would still give this company a try. I would consider that one of the biggest mistakes of my career. Most other companies will not even consider a person who has worked for Dollar General. It will stay on your resume like a giant black smudge. I have been asked 4 times now "why would I want to hire someone that came from DG? Looking at it from their point of view, in the future, I would ask the same of anyone else tainted by this company.
