Cons
Why did I leave if I found the career rewarding you may wonder? Well let me tell you: after nearly 10 years at E-Comm some things became very apparent to me, which I couldn't ignore anymore:
- The work culture is incredibly toxic. "Leadership" treats you like a number more than a human, micromanages, and might even bully you. If you or your coworkers try to bring up your concerns you will be labeled problematic and "whiney". and yes, this is the actual word my supervisor's boss used!
- Racism. It's deeply rooted in policing of course. E-Comm participates in DEI initiatives, but they don't address the systemic barriers or racism that happens in the workplace. Their efforts are performative at best, harmful at worst.
- The HR team calls themselves "People and Culture" and that's only the right name for them if they're describing what they don't support.
- People like you and me find ourselves in these jobs because we really care about helping and making a difference. E-Comm knows and exploits that. They will take everything they can from you.
All this to say it isn't worth it. There are many fulfilling jobs out there, and while this could be one the factors around the actual job make it a horrible work experience. Find something else that fills your cup while also maintaining your mental health.
It's 👏🏼 not 👏🏼 worth 👏🏼 it 👏🏼
