Pros

I work with a high needs population, and provide more comprehensive care than is often availiable in a school setting to families who may not otherwise be able to access support. I feel that my work is impactful and I have tools to make a difference. I have a lot of independence to adapt, build relationships and grow in my role, but also feel supported by my supervisor. We have a great supportive team of people I genuinely enjoy interacting with. The company pays competitively and provides high quality benefits. They were INCREDIBLY supportive of me when I was going through a medical crisis. There is a general win-win culture locally and nationally. We get paid school holidays in addition to PTO and much of the summer off.

Cons

This isnt so much an issue for me but I have seen other reviews discuss this issue do I thought I would add my 2-cents.. The company is a business and their success is depends on supporting contracts with school districts. This adds another layer of challenge, as my role can involve some political maneuvering in order to provide care to high needs, sometimes disruptive clients in a non mental health setting with staff who do not have a mental health background. There is often a need for structural and perceptual change in the school that is out of the control of ESS. A large part of my job is relationship building, negotiation and educating school staff. This can be time consuming and differs from a "typical" model of support. For the most part I have found schools to be receptive, particularly when they can see me as a partner who is there to support the school and the families. This can take some time to build, particularly in areas that are impacted by discrimination, poverty etc. In other words the role is wider than just meeting with a client for an hour and documenting the session. This is a good thing to know going in. Documentation can be a lot. I find myself frequently working after hours to get everything in. We have switched over to a new system and as expected the transition came with a lot of bugs that are being worked out, It seems like they are trying to address issues, but there are some growing pains. My biggest actual issue is that the company is East Coast based and growing rapidly. QM sets standards that are applicable to other programs in other areas, Sometimes the guidelines are in conflict with what is required locally and clinicians get in trouble for not meeting those standards. This can start to feel punitive and discouraging. It would help a lot if QM were involved when contracts are created so standards can be set for individual programs. There has been acknowledgment of this issue, but so far no meaningful change that I can see at my level.

Pros

I have been with ESS for the last 5 years and it has been a pleasure. I have been able to do lots of meaningful work with children in schools and have been given opportunities to grow by my wonderful supervisors. The intensive therapy that ESS does is not an inherently easy job, but I have felt very supported by my supervisors.

Cons

As with every company there are things that get rolled out without good consultation of the actual working conditions and implementations, especially as a therapist in California working with a company headquartered on the East Coast. That being said, my supervisors have always done what they can to smooth over transitions and support me in finding the best path forward to managing my workload and new expectations.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review, and for your 5 years of dedication to ESS. We’re especially grateful for the impact you’ve made in supporting students through this meaningful and often complex work. We also really appreciate your candid feedback around communication and the rollout of company-wide initiatives. You’re absolutely right that implementation can feel different across regions, especially in states like California with unique requirements and working conditions. Creating stronger feedback loops and ensuring that perspectives from clinicians in the field are heard before and during rollout is an area we’re actively working to improve. It’s encouraging to hear that your regional leadership has been responsive and supportive in navigating these changes, and we’ll continue working to better align communication and collaboration across all levels of the organization. Thank you again for your commitment to ESS and for sharing insights that help us continue to grow.
