Pros

You get pretty decent pay for a retail job, I made 7.80 an hour as a cashier which isn't great but its better than Food Lion. If you have problems with your supervisor, which you probably will because so many of Harris Teeter's lower level supervisors are quite unreasonable, the Human Resources department is helpful.

Cons

For one thing, if you are going to be a "front end" associate do yourself a favor and be a bagger, not a cashier. As a cashier the managers get pissed if you move away from your like 5-foot zone near your cash register. You will basically be stuck in one place all day, and you even have to ask to go to the bathroom or get a drink of water. Many of the front end supervisors are college dropouts on power trips, and this became increasingly obvious to me the longer I worked there. I won't go into too many details but I had two incidents when I needed to call the Associate Relations Hotline because of unfair or hostile treatment, and to their credit the human resources representative did side with me and helped to resolve the issues. In one incident I had not gone to the bathroom for about two hours, and although the store was busy I closed my lane and told a supervisor that I was going to the bathroom. She looked mad and told me that we were really busy, but I told her I *really* had to go. I had not been in the bathroom for fifteen seconds or so when she got on the intercom and paged me to my register. Also the work is fairly tiring, and while you get a 30 minute lunch break if you work six and a half hours, Harris Teeter has a habit of scheduling associates to only work six hours, where you only get fifteen minutes to eat. That is not nearly enough time to eat an adequate amount of food. Imagine a 4PM-10PM shift. You definately need a half hour to eat for shifts like that. Even a five minute break to go eat a granola bar or something would make things better.
