Pros

Good work life balance (some of the public sector stereotypes are true!); good training opportunities if you are on the development scheme; HR quite flexible and helpful in ensuring that I got a job that was suited to my skills and needs.

Cons

There were a number of good things about the Inland Revenue, but I was aware that I was working in the head office of a huge, bureaucratic organisation. I had a feeling as a young graduate recruit that many people had worked there way up from the regional offices and so it didn't feel dynamic or innovative. Plus no-one wants to talk to you at parties!

Pros

They provided ample opportunity for career development and training. Flex time is the best! The co-workers were motivated and doing their best to do a difficult job.

Cons

Sometimes a bit of a cubicle atmosphere (although that is changing) and tax might not be everybody's cup of team. You aren't the life of the party when you tell people you work for a tax administration.
