Pros

Easy job to do. Fun job to do. Other drivers are very nice and easy to get along with.

Cons

Newspaper charges the delivery driver a bunch of fees. One fee is…If they quit before a year is up then they get charged $200.00. If they quit after a year, and do not give a month notice then they get charged $200.00. If a customer says they didn’t get a paper, and you can’t prove that it wasn’t stolen then you get charged $1.00 for each paper. If you deliver to a home that is on vacation you get charged $5.00 for each paper. For every $10. in tips they keep about $9.85. They tell the customer that the driver gets all of their tips. This company owners should be in jail. On Wednesday, and Sunday you are lucky if you make minimum wage because of the gas, and time for extra homes that you have to deliver to. Also, they pay about a $1.00 in gas money for every $10.00 you pay. No benefits. Part time, but can disrupt your day because you have to be done before 6 AM so you have to get in early (like 1am 5am )depending on how big your route is. So if you get in at 1am , you are going to be tired the rest of the day.

Pros

Parking was free in a garage and newspapers were also free. Central location in the city within easy walking distance of central market and number of other downtown merchants.

Cons

Insurance benefits kept getting more expensive while insurance company became more difficult to work with. 401k contributions ceased and the education reimbursement plan was eliminated as well. While I was there the defined benefit retirement plan was frozen, but at least they allowed me to roll it over a couple years after I left. Employee morale was terrible given that there was no clear direction for the company other than manic changes just to seem like we were 'digital first', when in reality they are scrambling to stop the outflow of revenue from the print product. A saying they always had was "you can't replace print dollars with digital cents and stay in business", and unfortunately there's nothing they could do about it.
