Pros

Where to begin... Media Temple was once a really good place to work for, for many many years, and I mean REALLY good, until the wheels started moving to sell the company. The original founders cared about the general populace and rewarded key contributors even more. We were making products that had substance and value, backed by honest and helpful support and technology that was ahead of its time. We made mistakes along the way and we worked hard side by side through some major events, coming out of them feeling like our bonds with one another had strengthened as a consequence of our experiences. I made friends here that I hope to have for the rest of my life, and would welcome any of the original folks that I know from there for a beer at any time. Many of my friends still work there and I miss being there. This company was unique in that you could not help but to feel like family here in its heyday. I was able to grow my career and keep contributing back to Media Temple in meaningful ways for a long time. The original founders created a phenomenal culture which I will strive to recreate at any company I work for or start myself. The technical, design, and soft skills I learned here will stay with me and enable me to accomplish even bigger things. Truly an amazing experience. I wish everyone in the world could have this kind of experience in their life.

Cons

The GoDaddy acquisition of this company has not been good for Media Temple. Even in the years prior to the sale, the new President that was hired had only one thing on his mind and nobody was going to stop him. The original founders wanted out, and I know they regret the consequences of their own success but I place no blame on them for what happened after they stepped out of the picture. What was mostly a pristine, unadulterated brand and product offering started being manipulated in the typical and predictable ways to try to amp up the perceived value. In the end, those small sacrifices to the brand's integrity were nothing compared to the abuse and erosion that would happen after the company was sold. They all smiled and said this will be different, that it won't be the typical takeover we all think about, and a lot of us believed it and tried to make things work. Unfortunately, the truth was in front of us all along, and it was the years of fondness to this amazing place that made me try and that has kept the most loyal ones around to this day. The products don't seem to be innovating because nobody is actually allowed to be innovative, the leadership that GoDaddy entrusted with this vital mission have now bailed, and people that are even more disconnected from the background and heritage of (mt) will now step in to take a shot at it. I really hope they succeed in bringing Media Temple back to a respectable status but it does not look very likely unless GoDaddy sells (mt) to someone who knows how a company like this should be run. Even then, they have already spawned several mediocre products that are powered by GD tech with a (mt) badge on it so it might not be worth the trouble. If you are considering working here, don't let this review stop you - a lot of nice people still work there and you may have more respect for it knowing how great it once was. Just don't expect it to be that for the next few years, if ever again.
