I turned in my notice that I was leaving a bit more than 2 weeks early, because I wanted to save the company time and effort scheduling a business trip for me that would be after I'd left for my new position. They fired me two days later, right before Christmas. So keep this in mind: they have no loyalty to you at all. If you're going to quit and you're not a Principle Engineer of some sort, forget the two weeks notice, just quit on your last day.
