Pros
The editors for Edinburgh Live, Andy Shipley and Kris Gourlay are flexible and really invest in your learning as a young reporter. You get to do a lot of different kinds of reporting such as courts, investigations, breaking news, features, reviews, etc. I do feel I've learned a lot and have gotten good local bylines for my CV. We're also basically one of the only publications on the beat so you can learn without suffocating amounts of competition.
Cons
Reach PLC as a company does not invest in your professional development at all. If you want any sort of formal training or certifications, you're out of luck. Because it's tabloid and the company relies on ad revenue, you have to make things very sensational and you also have to produce a lot of content that is garbage. Important projects are not always prioritised or given nearly enough time/resources. Salary is very low compared to the work we put in and the hours/rota - every week is different and we are also understaffed. Reach is constantly laying off staff that teams can't afford to lose.
