Pros

PPTO = Protected Paid Time Off. An emergency can cost you your job at many employers. At Sam's Club we get PPTO alongside regular PTO. PPTO can be used to take time off with little-to-no notice. If you have to leave early, or miss a day, you can use PPTO to cover it and there will be no consequences. It will create extra work for coworkers, of course, but everyone will understand. The culture ay my store is really positive. Everyone is supportive and no one says "not my job." Management usually remembers the human behind the worker. The fresh department management team is the best I've encountered in my career. It's relatively easy to be promoted here. Anyone that is eligible and willing will be considered.

Cons

No vacation. Must save PTO & PPTO for vacation time. Store manager is always noticeably anxious and is very nitpicky. Things run smoothly until upper management or corporate arrives. Both frequently demand disruptive and unnecessary changes that usually end in member dissatisfaction. There is no formal way of obtaining necessary skills and materials for doing your job. Forklift certification consists of nagging someone to practice with and certify you. The handheld device you'll need each day can be found or not found in various places. You'll spend an inordinate amount of time looking for one each day. The rings for hanging price signs don't exist. You'd better collect them.

Pros

At the corporate level, the benefits and compensation are excellent. Colleagues at the producer level are standout teammates, talented, collaborative, and genuinely invested in the company's success. They consistently bring forward meaningful contributions and make the day-to-day work rewarding.

Cons

"Chaos" is not a word I'm using loosely. It's the word echoed across teams, including outside of Experience and Product. Leadership operates in a constant state of upheaval: frequent role changes, structural reorganizations, and strategy pivots that are implemented without any clear plan or consideration of cross-team impact. Incredibly talented people are let go as a result of poor leadership and people management decisions. There is no real culture of mentorship above the senior manager level. Leadership above the senior manager level made clear that mentorship isn't their responsibility and that you're expected to figure it out on your own, despite the company having training resources available. That disconnect is telling.
