Pros

-Giving dogs/cats treats, -benefits -free bag of cat or dog food every month, treat discounts & 50% discount on items if monthly quota is reached -making friends and networking - being able to chill at times -helping customers pick out needs for their new pets -Close to lots restaurants and stores

Cons

•Underpaid: Despite performing a wide range of tasks (some 30-60 minutes each), from store upkeep to management duties, the pay does not reflect the workload. Starting at $17.65/hour, the wage should be closer to $19-$25/hour, especially with added responsibilities like the dog wash installation in some locations. •Limited Advancement Opportunities: If you receive an "OFI" (Opportunity for Improvement), your chances of promotion are significantly reduced. Even with a good record, the only way to move up is by contacting head office directly managers won’t assist in this process. •Poor Management: Communication is often poor, and management is condescending. Schedule changes happen without notice, and they are rarely reverted without a meeting. Managers also forget requests, so it's essential to document everything. •Toxic Workplace Culture: There is narcissistic behaviour from management, with a tendency to talk about their own accomplishments while neglecting staff needs. Staff are often controlled and unable to perform tasks efficiently. •Forced to Meet Charity Quotas: Employees are required to raise a set amount for charity. Falling short of this quota especially if you’re working in backstock can lead to write-ups. •Chronic Short Staffing: High turnover, with long-term employees (5+ years) leaving due to negative changes in the work environment. •Suppressed Creativity: While they hire creative individuals, creativity is often stifled, and you’re expected to follow strict, uninspired guidelines. Workplace Safety Concerns: Employees are expected to handle chemicals and deal with animal waste without proper PPE. Additionally, there are tripping hazards, and the boss has neglected to order necessary cleaning supplies on occasion. Overburdened with New Products: Higher management often overfills stores with products, despite limited storage space. This leads to a cluttered and inefficient workspace. •Physical Strain: Heavy lifting and being by yourself, chances of injury are increased, have seen bosses neglect a workers needs after on-shift injury and haven't filed anything for Worksafe, employee continued to work. The rest is obsolete, to sum it up please do not work for or peruse this job. Pet Valu does not Value their workers.
