Pros

Opportunities abound within the U.S. Navy based on your yearly performance evaluations, the support of your immediate leadership, and the many different programs that you can apply for throughout your career. Your career does not have to be defined by those who went before you even though many people will tell you that there is a golden path to take for promotions. It's about your yearly performance for the most part.

Cons

The family/work balance is by definition out of balance! A 6-month or 9-month or 12-month deployment overseas will be required. Many times over. Remember, it's an adventure that you are going on and in many cases it will be worth it to serve your nation. But know that your family will be serving their nation just as much, too, when you are away. Also, the Job Detailing community has a lot of influence on your next assignment and there are times when you have to take one for the team. Usually, it will work out in your favor if you have a long-term goal in mind because the next time around you will be given consideration for taking a tougher assignment.
